Draymond Green: Star Forward Key for Michigan State vs. Louisville

Ryan RudnanskyJun 1, 2018

The Michigan State Spartans wouldn't be where they are now without Draymond Green. It's as simple as that.

And they are going to need him more than ever on Thursday against the defensive-minded Louisville Cardinals.

Rick Pitino's Cardinals haven't blown anyone away yet in the NCAA tournament, but they've also faced two good teams in Davidson and New Mexico. Davidson was a legitimate Cinderella threat, and New Mexico was battle-tested coming from the Mountain West Conference.

The Cardinals are for real. They have a pesky defense and a star in Peyton Siva who can lift them offensively. Their defense in particular should worry Michigan State.

Louisville is one of the best in the tournament at creating pressure and forcing turnovers. The Cardinals forced 13 turnovers against New Mexico, and they're averaging nine steals this season. Part of this is their man-to-man defense. Part of it is that they constantly switch from man coverage to a zone to keep opponents off balance.

In that regard, some of the Spartans' role players could struggle on Thursday. That's why it's so critical that Green continues to dominate.

Green, of course, has been spectacular for the Spartans this season. He's averaging 16.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists and has collected 20 double-doubles. He can score, rebound, pass and play within the game.

Tom Izzo said after Michigan State's win over Saint Louis, via CBSSports.com, "I've never, ever had anyone who does as much."

Against the Billikens, Green posted 16 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and two steals. He even hit two three-pointers (he's shooting 40 percent from long range this season).

Like Siva, Green is the type of player who can single-handedly change games. The Spartans are hoping he continues to do so, starting with Louisville on Thursday.
