2012 NFL Draft: News from Oklahoma's Pro Day
The Oklahoma Sooners are used to having a strong presence in the first round, but they are highly unlikely to place a player there this year.
But that didn't stop representatives of 29 teams (per NewsOK.com) from showing up in Norman for their pro day. The station reports that representatives of Oakland, St. Louis and Tampa Bay were not in attendance, while New England's offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Chicago's offensive coordinator Mike Tice were present.
A pair of edge-rushing prospects were part of the focus of the NFL, with Ronnell Lewis being the higher-rated of the two.
Tony Pauline of SI.com had Lewis at a 4.65 in the 40, a slight improvement from his combine time. Lewis ran drills as a linebacker, looking smooth enough to get consideration in the second round from the Packers, per a source that spoke to Packer Report's Bill Huber. Lewis is being looked at as a defensive end and a 3-4 outside linebacker, but he told the Oklahoman that he prefers "standing up."
Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year DE Frank Alexander completed a roller-coaster ride, as he was not able to work out at the combine after being told he had a hole in his heart. Josh Trotter from ESPN.com reports that the diagnosis was overruled and Alexander was cleared to work out for his pro day.
Pauline put Alexander between 4.75 and 4.79 in the 40, with a "terrific" 35" vertical. Gil Brandt of NFL.com also passed on that Alexander worked out as an LB in addition to DE and should be a third-day pick.
Brandt and Pauline both reported that OLB Travis Lewis shaved over a tenth of a second off of his combine 40 time, down to the mid-4.7s. Brandt said that Lewis had a good workout, but didn't elevate his draft stock.
Two other top prospects, CB Jamell Fleming and OT Donald Stephenson, stood on their combine numbers, but Brandt thinks that their strong position workouts "firmed up" second-round grades for both.
Wide receiver Ryan Broyles, once a top-rated prospect but currently sidelined with an ACL tear, will have his own private workout in April, according to ESPN.com's Brandon Chatmon. Chatmon also reported that Broyles is ahead of schedule in his rehab.
