David Garrard Is Still Alive, According to NFL Report [UPDATE]

Josh ZerkleJun 7, 2018

Former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard is not finished yet.

The Miami Dolphins plan to host Garrard for a workout later today, according to the player's Twitter account.

After being cut by the Jaguars only five days from the season opener, Garrard fell off the NFL map. His agent said that the 2009 Pro Bowler required offseason back surgery, but would be ready to suit up for the right price in 2012.

The Dolphins' quarterback search this offseason, aside from its passive wooing of Peyton Manning, has been unimpressive. The organization also spent over five hours on Sunday meeting with quarterback Alex Smith, who came away nonplussed with the team, according to a Miami Herald report.

Miami made nearly no effort to acquire former Packers QB and TGR favorite Matt Flynn, who signed with the Seahawks on Sunday. That deal is worth $26 million over three years, which strikes me as a fair price for an NFL-ready starter in this year's free-agent market (In contrast, Mark Sanchez's five-year extension is worth just over $58 million).

Garrard had trouble signing with a new team last season, but he might be find himself with another starting job in Miami. The team doesn't want to pony up for a legitimate starter, and that's disappointing, but it's good news for Garrard if he gets the job. At least he won't have to change his license plates.

UPDATE: Garrard signed a 1-year deal with the Dolphins late Monday. He can keep those plates.
