2012 NFL Mock Draft: Prospects Who Will Be Late Bloomers

Andrew KulhaJun 7, 2018

Not every player taken in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft will make a huge impact right away.

Of course, superstars like Trent Richardson, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III will most likely be ready to go right off the bat, but that can't be said for every player.

Sometimes, especially with the better teams, you'll see a first-round talent taken with a developmental role in mind.

Here's my latest first-round mock with emphasis on developmental players:

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

No need to develop Luck in the NFL. Just teach him the offense and go.

2. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

Griffin III may need a little bit of time to get comfortable with the NFL, but overall he's far too athletic to struggle much.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Kalil was made to play left tackle in the NFL. No problems projected here.

4. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Richardson is going to be the next great back in the league, and he'll reach that level fast.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Claiborne is going to be a lockdown corner on a Buccaneers team that has gotten very good through free agency.

6. St. Louis Rams: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

Brockers will most likely be the first pick taken without the immediate future in mind. At 6'6'' and 306 pounds as a defensive tackle, he's going to be very hard for new head coach Jeff Fisher to pass up on, especially since they now have extra picks.

It's going to take Brockers a while to become truly great, but with his intangibles, he could be looked at as the best defensive player taken in the draft in a year or two.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Blackmon has what it takes to come into the NFL and be a No. 1 wide receiver right away.

8. Miami Dolphins: Nick Perry, DE, USC

Perry is another defensive pick that will be somewhat developmental. He's quick, very athletic and has the ability to be a beast coming off the edge in the 4-3 scheme. Some would say he's picked a bit high here, but give him a few years of growth and he has the potential to be the next Jason Taylor.

9. Carolina Panthers: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

Poe can be a star. He's huge and he's fast, and the Panthers are going to love him.

10. Buffalo Bills: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

With the Bills defense starting to look very dangerous with newly signed DE Mario Williams, they will supplement their offense with a true No. 1 receiver. Look out for the Bills in the AFC East.

11. Kansas City Chiefs: Riley Reiff, LT, Iowa

Great pick here by a franchise that is quickly trying to rebuild on the fly. Reiff will be a staple on their offensive line.

12. Seattle Seahawks: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Ingram will be incredibly dangerous coming off the edge on this defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Cordy Glenn, OG/OT, Georgia

The Cardinals desperately need help at the tackle position. Therefore, they will take a slight stretch for Glenn at this spot. He's versatile—being able to play guard or tackle—and he had a great combine. They'll pick him up and hope that he can develop into their left tackle of the future in a few years. Until then, he'll be a great hole filler on the offensive line.

14. Dallas Cowboys: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

No development needed for DeCastro. He's the second best overall football player in this draft. The 'Boys got a huge steal.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

Huge need at linebacker for the Eagles, and it will be filled perfectly by the NFL-ready Hightower.

16. New York Jets: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Jeffery can become a star and a huge deep threat for the Jets real fast.

17. Cincinnati Bengals: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

Cedric Benson won't be coming back, and Miller is a more than adequate replacement.

18. San Diego Chargers: Courtney Upshaw, LB/DE, Alabama

The Chargers need the pass rush help, so they'll move Upshaw down to defensive end where he will thrive.

19. Chicago Bears: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

Adams is a huge developmental pick for the Bears, but they need a left tackle and he presents measurables that you can't deny. At 6'8'' and 320 pounds, he has all the makings of a bookend left tackle. He needs to work on his footwork and lateral speed, but he could be great in time.

20. Tennessee Titans: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Coples has fallen a bit due to concerns with his work ethic, but the Titans need the help at end and will gladly take a chance on him.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Wright can become one of the most dangerous weapons in the NFL, especially on a Bengals offense that is starting to look very formidable.

22. Cleveland Browns: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

Hill is extremely fast, and the Browns need to give Colt McCoy a deep threat.

23. Detroit Lions: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

Gilmore is extremely underrated and fills a huge need for the Lions.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College

Kuechly may not come into the NFL right away and make a huge impact, but the Steelers are going to start looking to get younger at the linebacker position. He fits the need there.

He's a tackle-machine and possesses all the intangibles to be very good. He can develop into the first of the next era of great linebackers for this defense in time.

25. Denver Broncos: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

Cox is a relentless defender that will fit in perfectly with this defense. They're looking for some help on the defensive front.

26. Houston Texans: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Sanu is a speedy deep threat that will thrive across from Andre Johnson.

27. New England Patriots (via Saints): Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

The Patriots will take a chance on Jenkins, who has character issues, but only because he's arguably a Top-15 talent. They need the help badly in their secondary.

28. Green Bay Packers: Whitney Mercilus, LB, Illinois

Mercilus will become a great NFL pass-rusher on this defense.

29. Baltimore Ravens: Rueben Randle, WR, LSU

With center Matt Birk re-signing, the immediate need becomes wide receiver. Anquan Boldin needs help, Torrey Smith is inconsistent and Lee Evans is gone.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

The 49ers will take the last of the developmental picks here in the first round. After firmly addressing needs at wide receiver and corner through free agency, they will take a shot on Martin and hope that he can develop into a starting tackle.

Martin was a big name earlier in the draft season, but he's come across as less polished and ready as some of the other guys at his position. With time and good coaching, he could become a steal here at 30. We know he'll get that from Harbaugh, who he is of course familiar with already.

31. New England Patriots: Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska

Crick is going to be incredible on this versatile defensive front.

32: New York Giants: Chris Polk, RB, Washington

Polk has the potential to be a Brandon Jacobs-esque player, but better. The Giants will take him here at the the end of the first. He's big, he's fast and he fits their running style very nicely. He's a steal.
