WWE: Why David Otunga Is WWE's Best Bit Player Right Now
Harvard Law School graduate David Otunga decided to go a different route than the degree he received at one of the best Ivy League schools should have allowed him.
Instead of donning three-piece suits and discussing litigation and pro-bono cases with other attorneys in a swanky New York office, The Argyle-wearing bodybuilder has embraced the world of spandex, pyrotechnics and grappling.
David Otunga first broke into WWE as a part of the inaugural class of rookies on NXT. Along with the rest of his fellow rookies, Otunga was one of the founding members of Nexus, a group that dominated everybody on Raw for several months.

Once Nexus broke up, there was little for Otunga to do. He was still somewhat green in the ring and the star power that came along with being Jennifer Hudson's man did not seem to give him that extra push.
Nowadays, Otunga seems to have found his stride as the legal counsel for John Laurinaitis. This role has allowed Otunga to be on camera more than most of his other NXT brethren these days, and he seems to be receiving a push due to his success in the role.
The great thing about Otunga right now is he realizes who and what he is to WWE and he is playing that role brilliantly.
It's really the little things that help to accentuate Otunga's gimmick. The coffee slurping, the bow-ties, the argyle sweaters and the penny loafers all help him to cultivate the image of a stuck-up academic.
His role has allowed him to be placed in more matches as well, and judging by what we have seen lately, WWE is starting to take him seriously.
The video packages for Otunga which are shown in the style of a cheesy injury lawyer are hilarious and really help to show the humorous side of Otunga's gimmick.
Don't get me wrong, he is nowhere near ready to be a main-event player or anything along those lines, but in terms of being one of the better side characters in WWE right now, Otunga is among the best.
When I say side characters, I mean the guys and gals who are not really in the hunt for a title all the time, but also don't have the stigma of just being a jobber.
Guys like Ron Simmons and JBL during the APA days, Too Cool and more recently Aksana, Santino and Zack Ryder are who I am speaking of: the people with a lot of lines but not as much main-event consideration.
While Simmons and JBL certainly saw their share of success in terms of titles, they were used heavily as a comedy team during a portion of the Attitude Era, and they did it beautifully.
Having characters like this is what makes WWE great. They provide a break from the seriousness of the Punks and the Undertakers and allow us to laugh a little.
Otunga may be a heel, but he is one of my favorite mid-card heels because he gets what is going on with his character and he plays into it to the best of his ability.
Do I see Otunga being a World Champion anytime soon? No.
Do I see him being a mid-card Champion sometime down the line? Yes.
He is getting better every single week and between his mic skills improving and his in-ring ability always showing improvement, I would expect Otunga to have a decent run in WWE.
What do you think? Is David Otunga one of the best bit players in WWE right now?
