NFL Free Agent Signings: Pierre Garcon Is Perfect Fit for Washington Redskins

Washington traded up to the second pick in the 2012 NFL Draft to grab Robert Griffin III to solidify their quarterback needs.

But, for Griffin to be successful in his early days as a Redskin, he has to have weapons to throw to. That's where former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Pierre Garcon comes in.

Garcon is the perfect fit to mold with Griffin for the Redskins.

Did Dan Snyder overpay for Garcon with $21.5 million guaranteed? That's a possibility, but he doesn't mind giving out the dough.

Garcon caught 70 passes for 947 yards and six touchdowns—all tied or past career highs. So those people that suggest Garcon has been solid because of Peyton Manning don't exactly realize that he is coming off a career year.

At age 25, Garcon's better days are still well ahead of him. He and Griffin could be a solid quarterback-wide receiver combination for years to come depending on how Griffin fares as a professional.

Griffin needs a talented, youthful wide receiver to rely upon, and Garcon fits that mold.

It's about making Griffin's first year as a professional as smooth as possible. Cam Newton was placed in a great situation in Carolina. He had two veteran tight ends in Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen to go along with Steve Smith on the outside and two formidable running backs.

That transition allowed Newton to play his game by not feeling like he had to do everything in order for the Panthers to win. Now, Newton seems like he's going to be a Pro Bowler in the NFL for years to come.

Griffin could be next.

Snyder's free agent signings have been questionable in his tenure, but this one absolutely makes sense from a football standpoint. I like the direction the Redskins are heading with what they've done this offseason.
