Manning MVP This Season? I Don't Think So!

Thomas MorelandJan 14, 2009

Peyton Manning was named MVP this season in football. Did the voters just want to give it to someone that already had two—giving another person the magical three MVPs in a career deal?

Sure, he won nine in a row to get a Wild Card bid and get his team in the playoffs, then another one-and-done performance.

Who thinks of these idiodic ideas of voting for the league MVP two weeks before the season even ends?

That would mean the last two weeks and/or the playoffs don't mean as much?

On the contrary, it means a heck of a lot more to take your team deep into the playoffs and perhaps to the Super Bowl.

I can think of some names that would be more deserving of an MVP at this point in the season.

Kurt Warner is at the top of this list. Yes, he had a slow finish because the division wrapped up early but look at him now!  A little different story I'd say.

Larry Fitzgerald is another player who should have received consideration for MVP. Without him, Warner didn't have to deep threat in order to keep the defenses honest.

Donovan McNabb has been phenomenal. Of course after the votes were tallied, who could leave out Rothlisberger, gritting it out and taking his team to the Conference Championship game and maybe on to the Super Bowl.

Voting and award distributions should be done after the entire season ends, playoffs and Super Bowl included.

Would Matt Ryan still be rookie of the year or would Joe Flacco be getting some serious looks?

Defensive and offensive awards would also apply. A huge playoff performance goes a long way in my mind. Isn't the objective winning the Super Bowl?

Harris and Reed will play each other again this weekend. Harris already has defensive player of the year. What if Reed has the game of his life and is a determining factor in beating the Steelers?

Drew Brees had a great season but no playoffs! Hmmmmm? Should you get offensive player of the year without the playoffs and/or Super Bowl counting for anything?

Who votes for these awards and why start early?

Let them play all the games and see who really makes a difference in a team's season.

Oh, I forgot. These are only awards for the regular season. That's just dumb. The point of doing well in the regular season is to advance in the playoffs and continue to excel!

I say Manning is a great player and one of the best quarterbacks ever, but let's start giving credit to the players that impact their team and the league when it counts the most.
