UNC Basketball: Why Tar Heels Will Fall to Kentucky in Championship Game

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

North Carolina doesn't figure to have much in its way en route to the NCAA championship game, and that includes Ohio State.

But the championship game itself will be a different story. The Tar Heels will likely have to face No. 1 Kentucky, a team that has proven to be just as dominant as its ranking would suggest this season.

Kentucky has everything you could want in a national championship contender except great experience, but the Wildcats do have head coach John Calipari, who has a bit of experience himself.

Freshman Anthony Davis has proven to be a monster. He can score, rebound, block shots and run the floor, and he's become an intimidating presence for the top team in the nation.

They also have Terrence Jones, who has gotten better in all facets of the game, including his mentality. Jones scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Western Kentucky in the Round of 64.

Don't forget guards Marquis Teague and Doron Lamb. Teague, a freshman, has become this team's leader, developing in only the way a Calipari protege could. Lamb is shooting 46 percent from the floor this season while shooting 45 percent from downtown.

Then you have Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, another freshman whose talent is unquestionable. Kidd-Gilchrist has averaged 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds this season and has helped tremendously on the glass.

Kentucky can run with North Carolina, something few teams can do. The Wildcats can also slow down North Carolina with their defense and have the size and post presence to limit the Tar Heels' production in the paint.

North Carolina has a championship-worthy team. If Kentucky wasn't in the picture this year, the Tar Heels would be the clear favorite to win it all.

But Kentucky is the best team in the country this year, and is perhaps one of the most dominant college basketball teams in recent memory. North Carolina won't be able to stop the Wildcats from blowing through the tournament.
