2012 NFL Free Agency: 5 Defensive Stars Still out There for the Jaguars

David LevinJun 7, 2018

While no trips from any free agents are planned as of now for the Jacksonville Jaguars, there is still a lot of buzz going around town that this team still needs to make a splash.

There are still defensive players who fall into the second line of free agents that the Jaguars could be looking at—players who may not have been the marquee names that sent general managers into a swoon, but still good enough to dominate and help teams improve in many areas.

Jaguars GM Gene Smith spoke to the Florida Times-Union on Thursday, opening the door for more possible moves and possibly trading out of the seventh pick in the upcoming draft. Smith was to the point, stating that the team still needs help with its pass rush but that the free agents available are not as strong as they were a year ago. The draft may be the best route for the Jaguars to take in assessing those needs.

While things are quiet in terms are activity and visiting with NFL players, these five players could still help this team and could still make a splash in Jacksonville.

Mark Anderson, New England Patriots

1 of 5

He is 6"4 and 255 pounds and could be a nice edge rusher or stand-up linebacker in Mel Tucker's scheme.

Anderson's size and speed are nice. While he might be a little thin in terms of weight, his ability to get to the quarterback would be a plus.

Luis Castillo, San Diego Chargers

2 of 5

At 290 pounds, he can play inside and out.

A former first-round pick of the Chargers, Castillo is one of those guys who does not get his name called very often, but he works hard.

I like the fact that he could play multiple positions on the line. He could be a real steal.

John Abraham, Atlanta Falcons

3 of 5

I have been watching this guy play football since I covered sports in Florence, SC.

Abraham, even in his mid 30s, is still a motor that will not stop. He is fluid and can rush the passer or help stop the run.

And with his agility, he would be a nice opposite end with Jeremy Mincey. His locker room leadership would be valuable as well.

Kelly Jennings, Cincinnati Bengals

4 of 5

He is still out there, and I think being back in Florida may do him some good. He was in Seattle, then Cincinnati.

The Jaguars have a decent secondary, but Rashean Mathis is on a one-year contract.

Jennings makes sense and could aid in the return game as well. And he could come at a lower price.

Marcus Thomas, Denver Broncos

5 of 5

Thomas is a Jacksonville native and former Florida standout.

He is listed as a defensive tackle, but I believe he can play both inside and out.

He would be a welcome addition for the rotation with Terrance Knighton and Tyson Alualu.

Also, he provides depth, which this team needs.
