USMNT: Top 10 Tweets of the Week (Vol. 2)

Christopher HallJun 7, 2018

What do you do when you're young, gifted and famous? You open a Twitter account and tell the world your business, of course.

Musicians, actors or athletes, everyone needs to let off a little steam now and then. For those of us who cover U.S. soccer, we're just happy that so many of the players choose to do it so publicly.

Welcome to Vol. 2 of the Top 10 Tweets of the Week from the player pool of the U.S. National Team.

No. 10: Freddy Adu Makes Us All Watch Philly Stink Up the Field

1 of 10

We were all excited for the MLS season to get started. So we appreciated this little reminder from Freddy Adu (@FreddyAdu):

“Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow on ESPN 2 9:30 eastern. Philadelphia Union vs Portland Timbers. Going to be a great game. #ADUit”

Of course, then we watched the game and saw a hapless Philadelphia (and a nearly invisible Adu) get trounced handily in the Rose City. Bet he wishes a few less people had tuned in.

No. 9: Maurice Edu Waxes... Poetic?

2 of 10

Authors, poets and singers have written about love for centuries. The topic has spawned some of the most beautiful and compelling words in the English language. And then there’s Maurice Edu (@MauriceEdu):

“Love is love but is love love...yea love is love...get it ;)”

No Maurice, we don’t get it. We really don’t.

No. 8: Style Advice from Heath Pearce

3 of 10

Some athletes are style icons. Sometimes that’s a good thing and sometimes that’s more of a Dennis Rodman in a pink boa thing. Heath Pearce, at @HeathGPearce, let us in on one of his hot fashion accessories for the spring:

“I love seeing adults in braces. Hahahah”

Pearce went on to say that headgear is the new black and he's really thinking about rocking a set of vintage dentures this summer.

No. 7: Brad Evans Gets Deep

4 of 10

My teachers always said there’s no such thing as a dumb question. Brad Evans (@brad_evans3) decided to test the theory:

“Can soap get dirty?”

But as with dumb questions everywhere, you have to Google it. Turns out Mental Floss has a whole write-up on the very issue. Something about “long, non-polar, hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains capped by polar, hydrophilic heads.”

Ouch, I sprained my brain.

No. 6: Landon Donovan Is Just Like the Rest of Us

5 of 10

Famous people always say their lives are really regular and boring, just like you and me. Landon Donovan (@landondonovan) set out to prove it with this update:

“Does anyone else ever feel like life is a never-ending circle of washing, drying and folding clothes?”

Landon, you’re a millionaire. Hire a maid!

No. 5: Brek Shea Plays Piano Man with Juan Agudelo

6 of 10

It’s nice to recognize the talents of your friends. It’s always a little nicer when you don’t act quite as shocked by those talents as Brek Shea, at @BrekShea, did in this update:

“with @juanagudelo17 in the lobby playing the piano... He's actually pretty good bit confused...”

Of course, Brek might have just been confused when Agudelo’s song choice turned out to be Britney Spears's “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”

No. 4: Bill Hamid Says Let the Kids Go Free

7 of 10

Most cities have local ordinances forcing you to keep your dog on a lease. But Bill Hamid (@BillHamid28) thinks some people are taking the leashing thing too far.

“I get really mad when I see these parents with leashes on their children! Let the kids be kids!”

I guess the 20-year-old DC United keeper has never had his neighbor’s toddler poop in his yard. Mark my words, Bill. Let the kids off the leases and it will happen.

No. 3: Carlos Bocanegra Takes Contract Fight Public

8 of 10

You might have read about Rangers players agreeing to take pay reductions in order to keep the club afloat. Of the three American players on the Scottish giant's roster, only Carlos Bocanegra (@BocaBoca3) took his negotiations live to Twitter:

“I need to change my goal to 3k. Who out there is getting 5k a day! I wanna hear about it you must be fit!! http://go.nike.com/5fbml6j

For the love of God! Will someone please tell my editor that it’s obvious Bocanegra is talking about his salary discussions? I’m so tired of him doubting me.

Jeez! I'm a professional.

No. 2: DaMarcus Beasley Shows How Internet Dating Should Work

9 of 10

This is just for the guys in the audience. Sometimes being a professional athlete has its perks. And sometimes you make it obvious in public. The tweet from DaMarcus Beasley (@DaMarcusBeasley) isn’t that interesting, but click the link and it will all become clear.

“RT @JessicaLipps: Can't see my face much but u get the picture http://instagr.am/p/H-mDLZt5Zq/

Really, Jessica? You’re better than that. Don’t you want DaMarcus to love you for your mind? No. No you don’t.

No idea what I'm talking about? You didn't click the link, did you?

No. 1: Stuart Holden Almost Back

10 of 10

I really wanted DaMarcus’ Twitter booty call to be No. 1, but so many people responded to the news that Stuart Holden (@stuholden) was nearing a return that my serious journalist side won out. Here’s his tweet:

“Up and at it for another double day!! last couple weeks here and back to the UK to be w the #bwfcfamily again!! #counts”

He’ll still have to work his way back to fitness and playing shape. But when you’ve been out of action as long as Holden, U.S. (and Bolton) fans will take any good news they can get.
