When It Comes to Alabama Football, You Ain't Seen Nuthin' Yet!

Larry BurtonJan 13, 2009

For those of you that that Alabama had their 15 minutes of fame again this year and now with their Sr. QB leaving and most of that All-American and All-SEC offensive line moving on after graduation, take a deep breath and get ready to be hit by reality.

You ain’t seen nuthin’ yet!

The QB we’ve got coming in is in many ways superior to John Parker Wilson in almost every way but experience.   Greg McElroy has superior arm strength and quicker feet and his backup is destined to be a great one as well, Star Jackson.

The loss of Glen Coffee to the NFL will be replaced by the nation’s top HS running back, Trent Richardson.  He’s a five star because that’s all they’ll give.  If you thought you got excitement from last year’s rookie, Mark Ingram, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

Think Alabama’s crying over losing 4 of the best offensive linemen we’ve had in a while? Ok, well we are sad, but we’re not ringing our hands with the likes of  D.J. Fluker coming in.  He’s one of the nation’s best linemen who may, like Andre, start and devastate as a freshman.

We have three other great HS offensive linemen set to come in so far and each shows the potential to be great ones.  Some may even get a little playing time this year.

We also have 6’5” James Carpenter coming in with two years under his belt at a Jr. College and he’s already in 305 pounds of conditioned readiness.  If you think you’ve seen the best offensive line you’re ever going to see at Bama, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

Sad about losing two Sr. tight ends?  Chris Smelly has already shown he can play in the big time and we have another one who’s had some playing time as well.  We are well set there.

Wide receiver?  Yeah, everybody knows Julio now.  But you better get to know Marquis Maze a little better.  He came on strong toward the end of the year and to be “the other side” to Julio, he better stay that way.

Alabama is signing a bevy of great receivers, any one of which could be another freshman phenom just like Julio.

You think Alabama had a good offense last year?  You ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

On defense, let’s just say the nation’s number 3 defense comes back almost intact.  I can hear teams swallowing hard all the way in Panama City Beach thinking about how much better they’ll be this year.

Bringing in possibly two of the best linebackers in nation in this year’s signing class sure won’t hurt the depth at that position.  Dre Kirkpatrick of Gadsden and Nico Johnson of Andalusia are about as good a pair as any team could get.  They could anchor that defense for years to come.

With just the commitments so far, Alabama has the number four class in the nation and that could improve with some late names many expect to wear crimson.  Now let’s add this to last year’s number one class and you can see that if you thought we’d seen high Tide, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

This 12-2 season looked good.  It set a high bar for other teams that follow to measure up to.  But in this fan’s heart and head, it’s just the beginning.  For those of you that thought last year was all there was going to be from Alabama, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.
