Matt Flynn Rumors: Why Seahawks Are a Terrible Fit for Free-Agent QB

The Seattle Seahawks are a terrible fit for free-agent quarterback Matt Flynn because the team wants him to compete for the starting job with Tarvaris Jackson.

“Tarvaris did a nice job for us last year, and we’ll be looking for someone to come in and compete with him,” [GM John] Schneider said at last month’s NFL scouting combine.

The Seahawks are following through with that plan, with Green Bay free agent quarterback Matt Flynn expected to arrive in Seattle tonight for a visit.

Flynn should not go to a team that won't automatically make him the starter, and right now, there are plenty of teams that Flynn would upgrade at the quarterback position.

Not only would Flynn not be the automatic starter in Seattle, he wouldn't even receive starter money.

"

But if the Seahawks sign Flynn, he likely will not receive “starter” money, but a contract more in line with the two-year, $8 million deal Jackson signed when he joined the team last year, with the idea of competing for the Seahawks’ starting quarterback job.

If Flynn were to go to a team desperate for a quarterback, such as the Miami Dolphins, he could make much more than $4 million per season and be the full-time starter.

Flynn has just two career starts, but has played very well in those two games and has shown the talent needed to be a starter in the NFL.

It's highly unlikely that he would dominate like he did in his first two starts over the course of an entire season, but there's no denying he's a better passer than several of the quarterbacks who were starters last year.

The Seahawks don't give him the best chance to start or make the most money. What Flynn needs to do is allow the Peyton Manning sweepstakes end, then see what kind of interest there is on the free-agent market for him.

Once Manning signs, Flynn will be one of the best quarterback options available for teams to acquire. Flynn needs to be patient and choose a place that can give him a nice contract and a guaranteed starting job.

Seattle doesn't seem willing to give him either.
