Pro Day Tracker: 2012 NFL Draft News from Michigan State Pro Day
The pro day tour is heating back up, and while most eyes were still on the free agency happenings Wednesday, eyes from all 32 teams in the NFL were in East Lansing for Michigan State's pro day.
The biggest attraction was QB Kirk Cousins, who was trying to continue the momentum from his excellent combine to set up residence in the second round (or even the late first).
Justin Rogers from Mlive.com reports that Cousins impressed king of the draftniks, Mike Mayock from NFL Network, for an interesting reason:
"It was pretty cool to watch the kid throw the ball very well, with better arm strength than I expected, but the fact that he scripted and directed the entire workout was impressive to all the coaches here. I think the more all these coaches get involved with the evaluation process, the more this kid's stock is rising.
"
The Sporting News' Russ Lande wasn't so kind to Cousins:
"He (Cousins) took a step backward with an unimpressive workout, according to an NFL source. Despite throwing to receivers, running backs and tight ends he had worked with throughout his college career, Cousins’ accuracy was off. A surprising number of his throws were off-target, either high or low, and his receivers constantly had to adjust to make tough catches. Wednesday’s performance will definitely concern teams and will likely keep Cousins’ rise from carrying him into the first round.
"
Muddying the water, SI.com's Tony Pauline was actually impressed with Cousins' deep accuracy and velocity, and echoed Mayock's sentiments about the effect of him running his own workout, calling him a "second-round lock."
Adding to the intrigue, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was in attendance, and Cousins later had dinner with Tomlin and Steelers assistants according to the MSU school newspaper.
DT Jerel Worthy also drew praise from Mayock who said "no way with his body type and skill set he gets past the first 20 or 25 picks in the first round." While Lande disagreed again, pointing out that Worthy was winded during the workout, "which should be a concern for any team thinking about drafting him in the first round."
WR Keshawn Martin had a good day, with Mayock calling him a "value play" who "caught the ball extremely well." Lande agreed and complimented Martin's routes and ball-tracking skills. Pauline echoed their sentiments, pointing out that Martin "caught everything" while running "scissor-sharp routes" and "great timing."
