2012 NFL Free Agents: Washington Redskins Sign S Brandon Meriweather

Zach KruseMar 15, 2012

The Washington Redskins are adding a new face to a position that has seen its fair share of turnover this offseason.

A handful of days after releasing O.J. Atogwe, the Redskins signed safety Brandon Meriweather to a two-year, $6 million deal on Thursday. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reported the agreement.

The Redskins could see two different starting safeties in 2012, as Atogwe is looking for a new NFL city to call home and LaRon Landry is scouring the free-agent market as well. Several teams, including the New England Patriots, appear interested in Landry.

Meriweather appears to be the first replacement.

If the Redskins can somehow get the enigmatic safety back on track, he could be an effective player for a relatively cheap investment.

A first-round pick out of the University of Miami in 2007, Meriweather picked off 12 passes from 2008-10 and earned Pro Bowl honors in both 2009 and 2010. His best season came in 2009, when he intercepted five passes and registered 83 tackles.

Things soured quick in New England for Meriweather, however, and he was released by the Patriots before training camp last season. He signed on with the Chicago Bears hours later, but was benched after just four starts.

Despite some of the struggles he faced last season, Meriweather figures to get another shot at a starting job, this time in the nation's capital.
