WWE WrestleMania 28: Will the Rock's Match for Next Year Be Foreshadowed?

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

The Rock is going to WrestleMania 29.

Wait, did I mean to say WrestleMania 28? Well, actually, no, I didn’t. The hot rumor going around these days is that The Rock is going to stick around the WWE well beyond his historic match with John Cena

During WWE’s press conference to announce that WrestleMania XXIX would be held in East Rutherford, N.J., on Sunday, April 7, 2013, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson vowed to appear at the event and “electrify MetLife Stadium like never before.”

Sources within WWE have confirmed to the Pro Wrestling Torch that Johnson will be competing at the event.

"

While this hasn’t been confirmed in any way by the WWE, what it has done is open up an interesting debate about what’s going to happen at WrestleMania 28 in The Rock’s hometown of Miami.

From what I’ve gathered, the widespread consensus is that Cena should beat The Rock, but that’s assuming that The Rock is done with the WWE for good and will never wrestle another match for the company.

If The Rock is going to wrestle again—whether that be later this year or at WrestleMania 29 in 2013—that definitely changes things up, though. Big-time.

Given The Rock’s busy movie schedule, a full-time return post-Mania is completely off the table. But if the WWE is going to extend his feud with Cena or build to another feud with a different superstar, then the company’s options for when that will happen are limited.

Considering that The Rock likely won’t be around for a while after WrestleMania 28, the set-up to his next feud is going to have to happen when he’s actually around. It’s going to happen at WrestleMania 28.

Like most of you, I am vehemently against any type of interference happening during this year’s match between The Rock and Cena. I’m of the belief that, even if you want to start building up a new feud for The Rock, you can do that on an episode of Raw over the summer or sometime down the road.

Unfortunately, I doubt that the WWE shares my sentiment. They want to start the path to The Rock’s next feud, and they want to start it at WrestleMania 28. Rumors are swirling that exactly that will happen when a former WWE Champion interferes in “the biggest match ever” in Miami.

"

There continues to be a lot of speculation regarding The Miz’s role at WrestleMania 28. Miz, who successfully defended the WWE title against John Cena in the main event of last year’s show, is rumored to be involved in this year’s Rock vs. Cena match in some capacity.

WWE is said to have a storyline ready for The Miz after WrestleMania and his recent losing streak is part of the buildup to that angle.

"

This report indicates that there is at least talk of having The Miz cost either John Cena or The Rock this match, leading to a storyline after WrestleMania 28. Just who The Miz is expected to screw over, however, will have a major effect on what happens in the WWE going forward.

If The Miz screws over Cena, I would ultimately expect that to result in a Miz/Cena feud that likely culminates at SummerSlam. If The Miz screws over The Rock, then I think it’ll be The Miz vs. The Rock at SummerSlam. Either way, though, I think the end result is always the same: The Rock vs. Cena: Part Two at WrestleMania 29 next year.

While we fans may not be thrilled about the possibility of a dirty finish to the biggest match in wrestling history, you better believe that the WWE is going to milk this Rock/Cena feud for everything that it’s worth. If they can get two or even three matches out of The Rock and Cena, then that’s exactly what they’re going to do.

That all depends, of course, on The Rock’s willingness to wrestle another match or two for the WWE after WrestleMania 28. I think he is.

When The Rock returned to the WWE to guest host last year’s WrestleMania, that’s all that was supposed to happen. But he got the itch to get back into the ring and wrestle, and he began scratching that itch when he interfered in the main event between Cena and The Miz.

Judging by the way things are currently shaping up for The Rock, and especially when you throw The Miz into the mix, it looks like The Rock’s still going to be itching when WrestleMania 28 is over and done with.

The Rock can make all the money he wants in Hollywood, but he can’t get the reaction he gets on Raw anywhere else besides the WWE.

When someone interferes in The Rock’s match with Cena at WrestleMania 28 or it ends with a dirty finish, we’ll see that The Rock wants to feel the power of the WWE Universe a few more times.
