NFL Free Agency Rumors: Where Should Quarterback Matt Flynn Sign?

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn has the world at his feet right now. He threw six touchdowns in the final game of 2011 season and is about to parlay that into a very lucrative contract.

Flynn is a young fellow, only 26 years old, and he has a pretty solid build. He seems to have the necessary skill set to play quarterback at a high level in the NFL, it's just a matter of seeing him do it on a consistent basis.

The Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins are in the running to sign Flynn, according to a March 13 report from Omar Kelly of The Sun Sentinel. However, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain-Dealer said yesterday that the Browns have not made Flynn an offer. Both teams need a quarterback as the Browns have never really had one and the Dolphins, well, you know who the Dolphins' quarterback used to be.

Dan Marino, for all of his love and worth toward the city’s fans and establishment, has never come close to being duplicated in the NFL. Flynn would serve as more than just a stop-gap solution for the Dolphins—he would be their immediate long-term solution at quarterback.

The downfall to that logic is the recent case of Kevin Kolb. Kolb was signed by the Cardinals last offseason to take over their offense, and he effectively drove it into a ditch.

Flynn does not have that luxury, and while the Dolphins are missing weapons, his window of opportunity to prove himself and that franchise as relevant closes ever so slightly everyday.

So without overtly giving away where I believe Flynn should sign, I believe we can all agree that he needs to stay away from the Browns.

If the Dolphins are serious about being players next season, then inking Flynn to a max deal should be a no-brainer. The new head coach, Joe Philbin, knows Flynn and Flynn knows his offense. For me, this one seems pretty easy.

Flynn should settle up with the Dolphins.
