New York Jets Coaching Search; Is Brian Schottenheimer the Answer?

NFLGridironGabJan 13, 2009

Things seem to be moving slowly for the Jets in terms of their coaching search. That is in least when it comes to making a final decision. Today’s Newsday talks about what is going on with just that, and how GM Mike Tannenbaum is having a tough time coming up with a decision along with owner Woody Johnson.

"

Mike Tannenbaum is now on the clock. The Jets, since firing Eric Mangini on Dec. 29, have interviewed eight candidates to replace him. Though the door isn’t completely closed to someone else entering the mix, it appears the Jets have the final field from which they will choose their next coach. All that’s left is for Tannenbaum to make his recommendation to owner Woody Johnson, but therein lies the problem. “Mike’s having a hard time pulling the trigger,” a league source familiar with the Jets’ search said Monday. The source described the general manager as having a good deal of difficulty with the call, the most important of his Jets career, which dates to 1997.

Despite all the outside talks about bringing in a coach, the guy they just may turn to in the end is current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, whose name just keeps popping up for the head coaching job, and is talking to the Jets again today about the position. It will be interesting to see if that is the route the Jets end up taking after realizing that their best option is right in front of them.
