Chelsea FC: Player Ratings in Emphatic Win over Napoli
Trailing by two goals to Napoli, Chelsea needed to win in convincing fashion to pave their way into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, a stage where heavyweights like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich await.
Although there were some nervous moments, Chelsea managed to win in emphatic fashion.
Here are the player ratings from the game.
Goalkeeper
1 of 5There were a few nervy moments for the Czech goalkeeper, but Petr Cech dealt with most of the threats effectively.
Rating: 7/10
Defenders
2 of 5All of the defenders had a great game today.
It is true that sometimes they left wide spaces for Napoli players to roam freely, but after the first goal they managed to defend with a great level of solidity.
Ashely Cole might have churned out a better performance, but he was not shabby either.
David Luiz had an excellent game. He intercepted balls with precision and made four tackles.
John Terry, before being subbed, also put in a great performance. He managed to get on the scoresheet with a great header.
Branislav Ivanovic had a fantastic game as well which culminated in a beautifully taken goal. He was strong in the air and tackled with pin-point precision throughout the game.
Ashley Cole: 6/10
John Terry: 7.5/10
David Luiz: 8.5/10
Branislav Ivanovic: 9/10
Midfielders
3 of 5Chelsea's midfield bossed the game well.
However, Michael Essien needs to find his world-class form yet again, as he went missing sometimes and probed forward when there was no need.
Juan Mata played a decent game but was not exceptional.
Daniel Sturridge, after putting on an impressive display in the opening segment, quickly faded into the background.
Ramires was very impressive in the park and made marauding runs. He also tracked back greatly and won a handful of tackles, six to be precise.
Frank Lampard was also highly industrious and tracked back extensively winning five tackles in the process. He was effective in the air and his penalty to put Chelsea back into the game was taken with perfect poise.
Michael Essien: 5.5/10
Frank Lampard: 9.5/10
Daniel Sturridge: 6/10
Juan Mata: 7/10
Ramires: 8/10
Forward
4 of 5Didier Drogba put on a man of the match performance to ensure that his side went through.
Ever diligent, Drogba set the tone for the rest of the match with his superb header in the first half. Furthermore, it was his fantastic assist that led to an even superb goal by Ivanovic.
Rating: 9.5/10
Substitutes
5 of 5Fernando Torres, although unable to register himself onto the scoresheet, showed a lot of energy and added a level of dynamism to Chelsea's play.
He made some excellent runs and provided an extra man for the midfield to aim at.
Rating: 7.5/10
Jose Bosingwa and Florent Malouda both came in late in the game. Malouda could have helped bury the tie had he managed to pick out Didier Drogba when Chelsea were on a fast break.
