2012 NFL Free Agent Predictions: Teams Who Will Land Best Running Backs Left

Rob GoldbergJun 7, 2018

The NFL free agent carousel is in full motion, but there are still a number of great players available—especially at the running back position.

With the shelf-life of a running back in this league as short as it is, teams have become hesitant to offer long-term contracts to players at this position. However, there are still squads in desperate need of help and will eventually cave to grab one of these high-quality players.

If a team needs a solid short-yardage back that does not fumble, BenJarvus Green-Ellis is the perfect solution.

He would be perfect for a team that either has another running back on the roster or is planning on drafting one in April.

Prediction: Cincinnati Bengals

Mike Tolbert

Even with a healthy Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs could use a big running back to compliment the speedster. The team has looked at Peyton Hillis, but the better decision would be to sign Mike Tolbert.

Both players had down years last season, but Tolbert provides a more consistent threat when needed.

Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs

Peyton Hillis

Last season did not go too well for Peyton Hillis or the Cleveland Browns, so you would think that they would be quick to part. However, the market might not be what either would like to see in other places.

GM Tom Heckert said he would re-sign Hillis if the price was right, and the running back does not have too much ground to stand on after totaling only 587 rushing yards and three touchdowns last season.

Prediction: Cleveland Browns

Michael Bush

Bush has made a living as a reserve running back that becomes a great player when the usual starter gets injured.

While he would probably like a chance at a starting gig, signing with the Chicago Bears might be a smart move for the veteran.

He could provide depth for Matt Forte—who is coming off a season-ending injury—and be an important contributor for a possible playoff team.

Prediction: Chicago Bears
