English Premier League: EPL Week 29 Previews and Predictions

Thomas AtzenhofferJun 5, 2018

This weekend the English Premier League gets interrupted by the sixth round of the FA Cup, which will see six of the originally scheduled matches be postponed until midweek rather than play at their normally scheduled times.

This past weekend saw a relatively low-scoring round, but it was not short of drama and action.

Liverpool's make up match against Everton was the most lopsided result as Steven Gerrard once again rose to the occasion for the Reds with a hat-trick in his 400th league appearance for his club.

The Reds had just suffered a 0-1 loss to Sunderland while Everton had managed a 1-0 upset of Tottenham making Liverpool's turn around that much more significant.

Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers both managed huge victories over fellow relegation-threatened clubs Wolverhampton Wanderers and Queens Park Rangers.

Wigan Athletic managed a draw against Norwich City to pull another point closer to Wolves and Rangers sitting above them at 19th and 18th in the league.

Aston Villa upset high-flying Fulham by holding the Cottagers scoreless for only the second time in ten games. Substitute Andreas Weimann scored late to give the Villains a home victory for the first time in four months.

Arsenal continued their surge to form with a victory over fellow top six club Newcastle United while Chelsea upset 10-mn Stoke City.

However, the most surprising results were those of the two Manchester sides as their battle for the title continues to rage on but took a slight turn.

Manchester City fell 0-1 against Swansea City as the Swans claimed their biggest scalp of the clubs maiden English Premier League voyage.

The Citizens' loss allowed Manchester United to pounce on a chance to return to the top of the table as they saw off an in form West Bromwich Albion side at Old Trafford to go two points ahead with ten games to go.

This weekend sees the schedule of matches rather staggered and due to the interruption of the FA Cup matches I am foregoing the projected line-ups this week due to the unknowns of injuries or suspensions that could be handed down before the rest of the matches can be player.

Fulham vs Swansea City

1 of 11

Fulham had been in fine form before their shock loss at Aston Villa last weekend. Before their faulting, the Cottagers had won three straight on the bounce with eight goals and a only a single goal allowed.

Despite their great run of form, it had to end somewhere, and what was thought a terrible substitution by Villa's Alex McLeish when he put on Andreas Weimann for Charles N'Zogbia proved to be genius as Weimann hit the extra-time winner.

Swansea City upset Manchester City to knock the Citizens off the top of the table and move themselves to within goal differential of the top ten in the league.

It will be a great matchup to see who comes out on top as they have the talent to beat anyone on the given day on both sides of the pitch.

There is great potential for an open and flowing game that could lead to a decent scoring fixture.

Match Prediction: Fulham 3 - 3 Seansea

Wigan Athletic vs West Bromwich Albion

2 of 11

Wigan Athletic managed to steal a point last weekend against Norwich City taking them within two points of safety in the tight relegation race at the bottom of the table.

West Bromwich Albion, however, had their great run of form stopped dead in its tracks by Manchester United as the Red Devils held off Roy Hodgson's Baggies in order to overtake Manchester City at the top of the league.

Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long will be itching to get back on the score sheet and Roberto Martinez's Latic's will be the easiest prey they have faced in recent weeks.

Match Prediction: Wigan 0 - 3 WBA

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester United

3 of 11

Wolverhampton thought they were doing the right thing sacking Mick McCarthy just over a month ago.

However, they have become nothing but a sinking ship without the one man the players seemed to believe in and blame themselves for his loss.

Manchester United, on the other hand, may have just been bossed in the UEFA Europa League by Athletic Bilbao, but they remain in high spirits that they can at least land a league title.

Wolves look like an appetizing meal for the Red Devils who will be licking their wounds from their most recent falterings.

Match Prediction: Wolverhampton 1 - 5 Manchester United

Newcastle United vs Norwich City

4 of 11

Newcastle United continued their frustrating dip in form with a 1-2 loss against Arsenal last Monday night.

The Magpies have only taken two points from their last 12 in four matches and are only still in sixth thanks to Liverpool having just as rough of a go of it in the league the last several rounds.

Norwich City, likewise, have dropped off the pace, but the last time the Canaries and Magpies battled the feathers flew at Carrow Road with the green and yellow wining 4-2 at home.

Newcastle will hope the confines of Direct Sports Arena will be more to their advantage.

Match Prediction: Newcastle 2 - 2 Norwich City

Aston Villa vs Bolton Wanderers

5 of 11

Aston Villa enjoyed their first home win in weeks with a surprise victory over an in form Fulham side.

The Villains will hope to keep that run going when Bolton Wanderers come to town this weekend.

Wanderers have gotten just clear of the drop zone and a victory here could give them a tremendous boost of confidence.

However, another loss or two for the Villains could have them embroiled in the relegation places, too, if they are not careful.

Match Prediction: Aston Villa 1 - 2 Bolton

Blackburn Rovers vs Sunderland

6 of 11

Blackburn will host Sunderland post the Black Cats FA Cup bought with Everton.

Rovers have gone three points clear of the drop zone while the Black Cats have dipped in form recently despite a home win over Liverpool.

Sunderland's result on the weekend if they win should put them into a great place mentally to see the match out, but if they suffer a heart breaking loss they could falter against their lower table opponents in the fall out.

Match Prediction: Blackburn 2 - 2 Sunderland

Chelsea vs Manchester City

7 of 11

Manchester City have to wait for Chelsea to enjoy their latest FA Cup match while the defending Champion Citizens have to look on in sorrow that they were knocked out in the earlier rounds.

Chelsea will be riding high whether they win or lose in the FA Cup, in most opinions, as their come-from-behind display against Napoli in the Champions League should have them in great spirits.

A win over Man City will boost their chances of UCL qualification and also allow Manchester United more opportunity to move further clear at the top of the table.

The Blues old guard is sure to have something to say about any of their upcoming matches.

Match Prediction: Manchester City 2 - 3 Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur vs Stoke City

8 of 11

Tottenham tackle Bolton in the FA Cup while Stoke are left to deal with a now upbeat Liverpool thanks to their Merseyside Derby victory.

Spurs should progress with less exertion than Stoke are likely to have to issue against Liverpool and the post cup tie match looks much in favor of Spurs despite their two game league losing streak.

Both sides desperately need a league victory as Tottenham's hold on third place is threatened by Arsenal while the Potters are now in the bottom half of the league.

Match Prediction: Tottenham 2 - 1 Stoke City.

Everton vs Arsenal

9 of 11

This is one of the biggest must wins for Arsenal so far this season.

The Gunners have a chance to overtake Tottenham if Spurs lose to Stoke City, but whatever that result it is essential that Arsene Wenger's side pour on the pressure.

Everton have only one loss in their last ten league games, that being last week's Merseyside Derby, and aside from that they have picked off points from giant after giant.

David Moyes knows that the match is equally as important to the Toffees as he pushes for the best finish possible.

Match Prediction: Everton 1 - 2 Arsenal

Queens Park Rangers vs Liverpool

10 of 11

Liverpool took the game to Everton with a Steven Gerrard hat-trick this past week before they head into an FA Cup battle with defending competition runners-up, Stoke City.

Following the Reds weekend victory, or unfortunate loss, they travel to London to take on Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

Since the arrival of Mark Hughes, the club have bought more talent and continued to be a downward spiral in the league as they are now worse off than when Neil Warnock was at the helm, having dropped into the relegation zone at 18th.

Liverpool should be able to overcome Rangers in their current form and with their road record much better than their home record it is just all the more reason to believe Sparky will be disappointed when Kenny Dalglish and the Reds roll into town.

Match Prediction: QPR 0 - 3 Liverpool

Consclusion

11 of 11

Another busy week of action as the clubs will have only nine matches left to either make or break their campaigns following this round.

The FA Cup with have games moving all around, but at the end of the day it is just more football for us all to enjoy.
