Jay Bilas Bracket: Breaking Down Bilas' Selections

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

Jay Bilas knows college basketball inside and out, so scouting his bracket is a good place to start if you haven't filled yours out yet.

Here's a quick look at what Bilas got right and wrong, and what you can do to beat ESPN's expert.

Good: Top 4 seeds in Sweet 16 in West

Normally, I'm not a fan of putting all "chalk" in the Sweet 16, but in this region it makes sense.

No. 1 Michigan State could struggle with Memphis, but the Spartans are too tough inside.

No. 2 Missouri and No. 4 Louisville both won their conference tournaments and come in playing their best basketball. Missouri can absolutely light it up and Louisville can be effective in any type of game (slow or fast) and that makes it hard for an upset to occur.

No. 3 Marquette is the only one that scares me, as they can be a little inconsistent. But their size and length creates tons of matchup problems for opposing teams, so I'm fine with them in the Sweet 16.

Bad: MSU over Louisville

Michigan State was one of my favorites coming in, but with the way Peyton Siva is playing for the Cardinals, they are a whole different team. If he continues to make plays like he did in the Big East, Louisville will knock off the Spartans.

Also, they have the size to match up with Michigan State.

Good: Gonzaga over West Virginia

Most people like West Virginia as the upset pick here because of Kevin Jones and because they are so close to home.

Don't dismiss Gonzaga, though.

The Mountaineers have the advantage on the offensive glass, but the Bulldogs are much better at scoring the ball.

Elias Harris has returned to his freshman form that put him on the NBA map and Kevin Pangos, their freshman point guard, can absolutely light it up.

Bad: Wisconsin over Montana

I love Will Cherry and his ability to defend Jordan Taylor, who is the engine that makes Wisconsin go.

When Taylor isn't comfortable, this whole offense isn't comfortable. When Wisconsin has trouble scoring, which is often, it is a bad team.

Look for the upset here.

Good: Vanderbilt over Syracuse

Everyone loves this pick and I tend to agree.

John Jenkins and Jeffery Taylor will be able to shoot over the zone while Festus Ezeli has the ability to dominate the boards on the inside, especially with Fab Melo out.

Bad: Notre Dame over Xavier

Mike Brey has done an awesome job with this Notre Dame team, but they just aren't that good. The Irish are just way too inconsistent on offense to win a tournament game.

What's more, Xavier is finally playing like the "pre-fight" Xavier when it was a Top 10 team. Tu Holloway loves the limelight, so he should come up big in this tournament.

I expect Xavier to roll easily, even if Notre Dame slows the tempo.
