NHL Trade Scenarios: One Prospect Each Team Will Absolutely Refuse to Deal

Nicholas GossJun 1, 2018

No matter how hard opposing general managers try, there are some elite prospects that teams just refuse to give up.

Whether it's a future franchise goaltender, a stud defenseman, or a possible 50-goal scorer, having young talent that you can bring up through your organization and not have to spend big free-agent money on is crucial to your team's success.

Let's look at one prospect each NHL team will refuse to deal.

Anaheim Ducks: John Gibson

1 of 30

John Gibson seems destined to be the Anaheim Ducks' starting goaltender in the near future, and judging by his stellar performance in the OHL this season with the Kitchener Rangers, it seems that he's right on schedule.

When you find a good young goalie prospect, it's foolish to part ways before you get a chance to see what he can do at the NHL level.

Boston Bruins: Dougie Hamilton

2 of 30

The Boston Bruins were very glad when Dougie Hamilton was available to take with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 draft.

Hamilton is an elite defenseman prospect with huge size and strong abilities at both ends of the ice. He projects to be a top pairing blueliner in the near future.

He has 67 points in 47 games for the Niagara IceDogs this season. He will be with the Bruins next year.

Buffalo Sabres: Joel Armia

3 of 30

Joel Armia is a talented forward who not only can score goals, but also has effective playmaking skills and is a willing passer. Expect him to join the Buffalo Sabres in about two years, when he will instantly improve their offense.

Calgary Flames: Sven Baertschi

4 of 30

With very few young offensive talents in their organization, the Calgary Flames are hoping that top prospect Sven Baertschi can give them a big scoring presence when he joins the NHL level possibly as soon as next season.

This kid can shoot, pass and speed up the ice. He's the total package offensively.

Carolina Hurricanes: Ryan Murphy

5 of 30

Defenseman Ryan Murphy will be a welcomed addition to the Carolina Hurricanes' blue line next year when he makes the jump to the NHL level.

Murphy will give the Hurricanes a young defenseman who is reliable in his own zone and can even be effective on the power play.

Chicago Blackhawks: Brandon Saad

6 of 30

The Chicago Blackhawks could use some more scoring at left wing, which is just what Brandon Saad will give them full-time next season. After being sent to juniors this season, expect Saad to remain with the Blackhawks for the entire 2012-13 season.

Colorado Avalanche: Duncan Siemens

7 of 30

Even though young talent on the blue line isn't a need for the Colorado Avalanche at the NHL level, there is absolutely no reason not to give Duncan Siemens a chance with the team next season.

He has too much talent to play at the junior or AHL levels next year. He needs to develop as a defenseman by playing against the top talent of the NHL.

Columbus Blue Jackets: Boone Jenner

8 of 30

Despite the need for a top line-caliber center on the Columbus Blue Jackets, fans shouldn't be willing to rush prospect Boone Jenner to the NHL level before he's ready. Doing so and having him fail would be a huge setback.

His scoring ability will soon be a part of the Blue Jackets, but probably not for a few more seasons.

Dallas Stars: Jack Campbell

9 of 30

After repeatedly proving that he can excel on the international level, expect goaltender Jack Campbell to make the Dallas Stars roster next season, even though the team's goaltending is pretty solid right now.

Campbell is too talented not to have at the top level. The American is going to be a star in the NHL someday.

Detroit Red Wings: Brendan Smith

10 of 30

With the Detroit Red Wings having some older defensemen on their roster, top prospect Brendan Smith will soon find his way to the NHL full-time to usher in a new era of Red Wings blue lines.

Edmonton Oilers: Oscar Klefbom

11 of 30

With a huge need for young, talented defensemen, there is no chance that the Edmonton Oilers trade Oscar Klefbom anytime soon. His physicality and defensive skills are top-notch and he will be a welcomed addition to a team that desperately needs a potential No. 1 defenseman.

Florida Panthers: Jonathan Huberdeau

12 of 30

With his versatility in being able to excel at both center and right wing, there's little chance top offensive prospect Jonathan Huberdeau doesn't make the Florida Panthers roster for next season.

He is a talented goal scorer whose playmaking skills are also improving. The Panthers are already a much improved team, but Huberdeau could make them even more dangerous next year.

Los Angeles Kings: Tyler Toffoli

13 of 30

The Los Angeles Kings badly need more scoring, and they will get it next season when Tyler Toffoli, one of the OHL's best offensive players, joins the team.

Toffoli is a goal-scoring machine and will take the NHL by storm next year.

Minnesota Wild: Mikael Granlund

14 of 30

Mikael Granlund is an elite offensive talent and will be a future star in the NHL for a long time. He can score goals, find teammates scoring chances with exquisite passing, and also has top-level speed.

By choosing to stay another year in Finland playing against quality players, Granlund's game will be polished enough that he can find a lot of success next season when he's in the NHL for good.

Montreal CanadiensL Nathan Beaulieu

15 of 30

The Montreal Canadiens have done a better job drafting quality defensemen than most of the teams in the NHL the past few seasons, and Nathan Beaulieu is just another future star that will have a profound impact at both ends of the ice, just like PK Subban.

Nashville Predators: Austin Watson

16 of 30

With the Nashville Predators desperately needing a potential star on offense, there's little chance they trade away a prospect such as Austin Watson, who has the complete package offensively and will be a reliable goal scorer in the near future.

New Jersey Devils: Scott Wedgewood

17 of 30

This is a no-brainer. With New Jersey Devils legend and future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur possibly retiring this season, there's no way the team gives up a stud goaltending prospect like Scott Wedgewood anytime soon.

New York Islanders: Ryan Strome

18 of 30

The New York Islanders are hoping that top prospect Ryan Strome can join the team next season and be an elite player for many years to come. He has point-per-game potential and will give the Islanders a ton of goal scoring.

Strome and star John Tavares on the same line would be scary for opposing teams' defensemen.

New York Rangers: Chris Kreider

19 of 30

With Chris Kreider likely joining the New York Rangers this season, he will give the Eastern Conference leaders another power forward who can score goals and use his tremendous speed effectively.

The Rangers refused to trade him in a package for Columbus Blue Jackets star Rick Nash, and it was a good decision by New York.

Ottawa Senators: Mika Zibanejad

20 of 30

There's no question that Mika Zibanejad  will be playing for the Ottawa Senators next season as an important part of their offense. His goal-scoring ability is really going to help one of the more talented young teams in the NHL.

Philadelphia Flyers: Sean Couturier

21 of 30

With most of Philadelphia's best young players already at the NHL level, Sean Couturier is my choice for them here.

He's already performing strongly at the NHL level, and there's no reason to believe that won't continue for a long time.

Phoenix Coyotes: Brandon Gormley

22 of 30

When Brandon Gormley arrives in Phoenix to play for the Coyotes full time, he will provide the team with another talented young defenseman who can be effective at both ends of the ice.

The Coyotes are building some nice depth on the blue line for the future; now they just need to find some forwards who can replace stars Ray Whitney and Shane Doan.

Pittsburgh Penguins: Simon Despres

23 of 30

Simon Despres already has NHL experience and will likely find his way onto the Pittsburgh Penguins roster for the entire 2012-13 season.

His ability to score goals will give the team some nice offensive depth to help them overcome injuries to key players, which they have done a great job with this season.

San Jose Sharks: Freddie Hamilton

24 of 30

Center prospect Freddie Hamilton projects to make the NHL full time just as Joe Thornton and other veteran forwards on the San Jose Sharks could be regressing in talent or even retiring.

Hamilton's fantastic passing skills will make him a future first- or second-line center at the NHL level.

St. Louis Blues: Vladimir Tarasenko

25 of 30

Vladimir Tarasenko will be an NHL superstar when he arrives in North American and begins his career with the St. Louis Blues.

The Russian forward is already having great success in the KHL and has elite goal-scoring talents. His leadership skills are also top notch.

Tampa Bay Lightning: Vladislav Namestnikov

26 of 30

Vladislav Namestnikov will likely take over for Tampa Bay Lightning star Martin St. Louis on the wing when he retires.

Namestnikov is one of the few talented prospects in the Lightning system, but he will be a solid offensive player for many years with his goal-scoring ability.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Joe Colborne

27 of 30

After proving he could be effective at the NHL level in limited action this season, expect Joe Colborne to have an even bigger role with the Toronto Maple Leafs next season.

Colborne has good size and has very good offensive talents. He will be a fixture on the Leafs' top lines for years to come.

Vancouver Canucks: Eddie Lack

28 of 30

With the possibility of backup goaltender Cory Schneider leaving the Vancouver Canucks this summer through trade or free agency, top prospect Eddie Lack isn't going anywhere.

Lack has dominated the AHL with the Chicago Wolves and shouldn't be in the minor leagues too much longer. He could start on a number of NHL teams.

Washington Capitals: Evgeny Kuznetsov

29 of 30

Evgeny Kuznetsov is an elite offensive prospect who has point-per-game potential and is only going to get better. He has scored at a high rate in the KHL this season and could be a future superstar with the Washington Capitals.

He and Alexander Ovechkin could be a superstar duo for many years in Washington D.C.

Winnipeg Jets: Mark Scheifele

30 of 30

When Mark Scheifele is with the Winnipeg Jets full time next season, he will instantly make the team's scoring, which ranks in the bottom half of the league, much better with his playmaking skills.
