NFL Rumors: Browns Deny Pursuit, Imminent Offer to Free-Agent QB Matt Flynn

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Maybe the race for Peyton Manning won't cost the Miami Dolphins a shot at quarterback Matt Flynn after all.

A report from Will Brinson of CBS Sports indicated both the Dolphins and Cincinnati Browns were "negotiating" with Flynn's representation.

The Browns have denied that rumor today even denying any pursuit of the QB at all. Mary Kay Cabot of the The Plain Dealer reports:

BREAKING: #Browns have not pursued GB QB Matt Flynn and reports that they're set to make offer untrue, league source tells PD.

About a week ago, Browns GM Tom Heckert said (via Cabot) the Browns were unlikely to pursue any big-name free agents, including at the quarterback position.

They also have a lot of interest in some of the rookie quarterback prospects as Adam Schefter reported the Browns tried to land the No. 2 overall pick from the Rams before Washington could get a deal done.

With Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III expected to go No. 1 and No. 2, the Browns are unlikely jump on Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill at No. 4 overall. They could, however, make a play for Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden, whom they're rumored to be excited about, later in the first or early in the second round.

What we do know for now is that Colt McCoy is still the starting quarterback in Cleveland and the Browns don't appear ready to replace him via free agency.

The Miami Dolphins are certainly happy about this, as they're continuing to chase Peyton Manning but also pursuing Flynn as a backup plan should they miss.

Unless something changes in the very near future, the Browns are a team that has a lot of moves to make, but one such move won't be under center.

Throwing seven different kinds of smoke on Twitter, too.
