Bayern Munich vs. FC Basel: A Tactical Review and Player Ratings in Emphatic Win

Bayern Munich progressed to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League after a triumphant victory over FC Basel (via The Telegraph). The seven-goal hiding marked an end to the stupendous run enjoyed by Basel, who had beaten Manchester United to progress to the knockout stages and also beat Bayern by a lone goal in the first game. 

Bayern employed a 4-2-3-1 formation on the night that worked with remarkable efficiency. 

They pressed high and controlled possession. 

The Bavarian club had a total of 23 shots, 14 of which were on target. Basel had only one shot on target. 

Bayern were effective in utilizing the wings in most instances, as a majority of the offensive was initiated on the flanks. 

Franck Ribery notched up three assists while Arjen Robben scored two and collected one assist.

Manuel Neuer: 7/10

The score-line itself reflects that he was untroubled for the majority of the game. 

Defenders

All defenders were exceptional on the night. Holger Badstuber was particularly splendid to watch at the center of the defence. He had a passing accuracy of 96 percent on the night and also won three tackles. 

Jerome Boateng was also equally superb. The full-backs performed their job, making offensive runs when possible. 

Full Backs: David Alaba and Philipp Lahm: 8/10

Center Backs: Holger Badstuber and Jerome Boateng: 8/10

Defensive Midfielders 

Toni Kroos: 8.5/10

He was highly impressive and was very effective in his ball distribution. His pass accuracy was a fantastic 92 percent. 

Luiz Gustavo: 8/10

He also provided a great shield for the defense. He won 33 percent of the aerials and six tackles. Impressive. 

Midfielders

Thomas Müller: 8.5/10

He occupied the role of Attacking Center Midfielder, and he also had a great game. He got onto the score sheet with a great goal onto the bottom right corner.  

Franck Ribery: 9.5/10

Playing on the left flank, he made life miserable for the Basel players. His deliveries into the box were superb, and he got three assists to his name.  

Arjen Robben: 9.5/10

It's great to see Robben terrorize defenses again with such prowess. He contributed to a lone assist and also scored two goals.

Mario Gomez: 10/10

Four goals in a single game. Can we assign any other rating?
