NFL Free Agency 2012: Is the Giants Pursuing Martellus Bennett a Smart Move?
The first day of free agency in the NFL got off to a loud and thunderous start.
Names like Vincent Jackson, Cortland Finnegan, Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan and Marques Colston all got signed while Brandon Marshall got traded.
For the New York Giants, their biggest move on the first day of free agency was re-signing cornerback Terrell Thomas to a four-year, $28 million deal.

Thomas was priority No. 1 for the Giants to bring back because he is extremely talented as a cornerback.
Now that the Giants have taken care of bringing Thomas back, they are turning their attention to signing a tight end.
According to Mike Garafolo of the Newark-Star Ledger, the Giants have brought in Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett for a meeting.
"Confirming: TE Martellus Bennett on his way here for a visit. Team has identified him as their top target. This could get done quickly. #nyg

On Monday, the Cowboys met with Bennett to see if they could retain his services, but Bennett is looking to become a full-time starter who catches 60-plus balls a year, and as long as Jason Witten is on the team, Bennett will look for work elsewhere.
According to his source who wished to remain unnamed, Garafolo said that the Giants were making a strong push to land Bennett and a deal could get done quickly.
Personally, I'm not sold on Bennett, mostly because he's been a career backup who wasn't very impressive in the Dallas offense.
Now, it could be that Bennett wasn't used to his full potential in Dallas with Witten in the way, so maybe if he does get to play with the Giants, he could be used to his potential.
Bennett might not be the only name the Giants could talk to and bring in, as the Oakland Raiders will release Kevin Boss on Wednesday.
The talk around the league is that with Boss being released, going back to the Giants would make a ton of sense for him.
There's always the possibility that the Giants could bring in both Bennett and Boss, especially since both Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum tore their ACL's during Super Bowl XLVI and will likely begin the 2012 season on the PUP List.
I think Boss would be the better signing for the Giants since he was always one of Eli Manning's favorite targets, plus he knows the Giants current offensive system.
It'll be interesting to see where the Giants go with Bennett and if they do in fact lock him up quickly.
Stay tuned, Giants fans.
