2012 Free Agency: No Free Agency News Is Bad News for the Jacksonville Jaguars

David LevinMay 31, 2018

While the Jacksonville Jaguars signed two of their own top free agents (Dwight Lowery, Jeremy Mincey) on Tuesday night, there wasn't the huge "splash" fans were waiting for from team owner Shahid Khan.

Other free agents found homes in other NFL cities. The Jaguars saw players thought to be on their radar take a pass at one of the league's smaller markets. Pierre Garcon is in Washington. Vincent Jackson is in Tampa Bay and players like Marques Colston re-signed with their current teams before the free-agency period started.

The good news is the Jaguars have worked to retain the majority of their defense (they still have Matt Roth to try and re-sign) but are lacking another pass rusher and another player in the secondary.

And then, there is the offense. Laurent Robinson, a receiver, has scheduled a stop in Jacksonville. He looks to be a serious contender to become the first free agent the team signs away from another organization.

It was thought Harry Douglas, the third receiver for the Atlanta Falcons, would be of interest to the Jaguars as well, but he re-signed with Atlanta. Now, someone like a Brandon Lloyd, who has ties to Jacksonville since receivers coach Jerry Sullivan was his coach in San Francisco, could be one of this team's targets.

One can only hope.

If the Jaguars are to make that "splash" that has been talked about in recent weeks and from the moment Khan bought the team from Wayne Weaver, the team must spend, spend, spend. And there is no sign that they aren't willing to do so. But players want to first, get paid, and second, play for a winning organization. In the case of receivers, it usually comes down to the quarterback and the system.

Blaine Gabbert is still learning—actually, this is his second offense in as many years. That does not give incoming receivers a vote of confidence coming into the season.

Today is a new day, a new start and a new outlook on free agency. If the Jaguars start to make moves, then maybe the steam train continues to roll. Maybe Robinson signing will lead to another and another. Maybe Lowery and Mincey being under contract means Roth, who has been dealing with concussion issues, will re-up for another go around.

If all these things happen, then we as fans can breathe a little better. The draft does not have the urgency it did to find "the" receiver and the team can focus on many positions, not just one.

But it just takes one "splash" to get every in the pool. The Jaguars are waiting to see who jumps in first.
