2012 NFL Free Agents: Laurent Robinson Would Be a Good Addition to the Jaguars

David LevinJun 5, 2018

His athleticism is enticing. His size is intriguing. And if he signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he would immediately become the best receiver on the roster since Jimmy Smith.

Those are pretty nice accolades for Laurent Robinson, the Dallas Cowboys free agent who has scheduled his first stop on the free agent express in Jacksonville.

Come to think of it, Robinson could have been a Jaguars player last free agent period, but the team did not act on it.

Robinson was signed by the Cowboys when injuries to Miles Austin and Dez Bryant left them depleted of outside weapons. The 6'2", 197-pound receiver is also had 11 touchdowns on 54 receptions last year. Again, far more than any Jaguars receiver had last season.

The move to possibly sign Robinson means a great many things for the Jaguars. While Dallas may still have intentions of re-signing him, he would give Jacksonville speed on the outside and allow the team's leading receiver, Mike Thomas, to move back into the slot.

Also, because of his height, he would become an immediate red-zone target.

Jacksonville is in the market for receivers, but the numbers have gotten thinner as the last two weeks have progressed.

Big names like Dwayne Bowe, Stevie Johnson, Marques Colston and Wes Welker all re-signed with their current teams. Pierre Garcon and Vincent Jackson appear to be off the board now as they look to have found homes (Garcon in Washington and Jackson in Tampa Bay).

The remaining free agents include Hines Ward, Robinson and Harry Douglas. There are others out there.

Also, it is possible the team could sign Robinson for less than, say, a Jackson, who would command more on the open market.

Right now, the Jaguars have only signed current roster players. Today they re-signed current punter Nick Harris and agreed in principle with linebacker Russell Allen.

Maybe signing Robinson means the team goes after Douglas. That gives the Jaguars two new starters and makes finding a receiver in the draft important but not crucial.

And above everything else, this team needs a splash, something huge for the fans to get excited about. Hopefully, this would be the start of that move.
