Bayern Munich: Mario Gomez Tears Apart FC Basel

In the first leg between Bayern Munich and FC Basel, contrary to all expectations, FC Basel emerged victorious. It was a huge shock, as Bayern were pitted as favorites amongst the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid to take home the UEFA Champions League crown this season. 

However, today's emphatic win has cemented their status as true competitors to the title once again. 

Arjen Robben's left-footed shot towards the bottom-right corner opened the proceedings for Bayern. 

On the 41st minute, it was Thomas Müller who made the score 2-0 by connecting on a cross from Robben. Mario Gomez made it three in the 44th minute. 

It was Mario Gomez again in the 50th minute to make it Bayern Munich four, Basel zero. He connected to a Franck Ribery cross with his left foot and put the ball into the top left corner. 

Another goal followed for Bayern in the 61st minute. The same players were involved again. 

A Franck Ribery assist; a Mario Gomez headed-goal. 

The goal marked a hat trick for Gomez. 

However, the German striker was not done yet. On the 67th minute, Mario Gomez put the ball into the top right corner. Four goals for Mario. Three Assists to Ribery.

However, the humiliation was not yet over for Basel. 

A splendid through ball from Bastian Schweinsteiger was lashed onto by Arjen Robben whose left-footed shot netted the ball into the bottom-left corner. 

That's how things ended, although it could have been even worse for Basel. 

All throughout the game, Bayern Munich looked as if they wanted to prove a point. And boy did they prove it. 

The final marks FC Basel's end to a fairy-tale journey that saw them proceed to the knockout-stage after eliminating Manchester United.
