Jay Bilas Bracket: ESPN Analyst Grossly Overrates North Carolina

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

ESPN's Jay Bilas has picked the North Carolina Tar Heels to make it all the way to the FInal Four, grossly overrating their true worth.

There are a couple of reasons to believe Bilas might be right about North Carolina. For one, they are hopeful to get John Henson back after he missed some time with an injured wrist, which would be a huge boost. Additionally, they have the second-ranked offense in the nation.

But there is something missing from this year's Heels squad, and I don't expect them to make it past Georgetown in the Elite 8.

They don't possess the killer instinct to put lesser teams down, as the losses to UNLV and Florida State (twice) show. The Tar Heels also struggle from the three-point line when the game is on the line.

We've all seen how damning it can be to go cold from distance in the tournament, and it won't be any different this time around.

All it will take is a bad shooting night, and North Carolina is doomed. A team with a strong front court like Georgetown will be able to capitalize by running the floor off of misses for quick scores.

Speaking of bad shooting, the Tar Heels only shoot free throws at a rate of 68 percent—a stat that could very well doom them in a tight contest against a team with good shooters.

There is just too much that can go wrong for North Carolina. The talent is there, to be sure, but the 2012 Tar Heels just don't have what it takes to make it to the Final 4
