CBS NCAA Bracket 2012: Upsets the Experts Are Predicting

Kevin Van PeltJun 3, 2018

The CBS Sports experts have their brackets out, and there are some interesting upset picks.

Dennis Dodd has an interesting bracket. He has the eighth seed Creighton reaching the Final Four in the Midwest bracket. Reaching the second round is as far as most people have Creighton going.

The mindset behind this pick makes Dodd look like a smart guy. They are first in field goal percentage and average 80 points per game. They do not have much height and have trouble rebounding, but they are a great three-point shooting team and are dangerous in transition.

However, these stats may be inflated based off who they played. Creighton did not play one ranked team this season. They played one quality team this season, and that was Wichita State. They lost that game, 89-68. They do not have the depth to keep up with North Carolina in physicality and their defense.

Staying with Dodd, he also has Long Beach State reaching the Elite Eight. At the No. 12 seed, Long Beach State will struggle to get past New Mexico in the first round. New Mexico is a well-rounded team that has balance on both sides of the ball. New Mexico has seven shooters on the team who can shoot the three with consistency. That is something that any team will have a hard time defending.

Long Beach State played three ranked teams this season and lost them all. They have not shown that they are capable of beating the best teams in the country. Expect Long Beach to be eliminated in the first round.

An upset pick that is an interesting one is from Gregg Doyel. He has VCU advancing to the Sweet 16. VCU made their remarkable run last season all the way to the Final Four. This may be more of a reputation pick, as VCU as an almost entirely different team this season. However, after another great run they won their conference tournament and have momentum to carry them into the tournament.

Coach Shaka Smart is a great coach who will use what his squad did last season to inspire his team. His team's defense is very aggressive and applies a lot of pressure to opposing teams. They struggle shooting the three, but have what it takes to advance far for the second straight year.

If they get to the Sweet 16, it will be hard to beat Kentucky and their size. Anthony Davis is the player of the year in the SEC and is a fantastic defender. VCU will struggle to get by Kentucky but would be a smart pick.

While filling out your brackets, make sure that your upset picks are few because they do not happen as much as you think. Every few years there will be a team like George Mason or VCU, but they are hard to find.
