WWE Raw Recap: Chris Jericho, Alcoholism and CM Punk's Response

Kaleb KelchnerJun 7, 2018

You would be hard pressed to find a topic that hasn't been touched on in the world of professional wrestling, but last night on Raw, Chris Jericho hit a button. That button was alcoholism.

Chris Jericho addressed CM Punk after Punk defeated the Miz, and claimed he found out a dirty little secret of Punk's. The secret was directly related to Punk's decision to become straightedge, as Jericho had learned that Punk's father was an alcoholic.

Jericho went on, saying that Punk's father was never there for him, and that maybe the reason for all of the tattoos Punk has was to let out some of the pain it caused. Alcohol is in Punk's blood, Jericho would say.

To close, Jericho said that he wanted to take his rightful title of "Best in the World" at WrestleMania, and let Punk take his rightful title as well...an alcoholic. Jericho's plan is to break CM Punk, take his title, and be the direct cause of Punk becoming an alcoholic.

Whoa.

As if the storyline wasn't enough to impact the viewer, CM Punk's body language (legitimate or acting) was off the charts. He looked like Jericho hit a nerve, and personally, he hit a nerve with me as well.

I'd wager that Jericho hit a nerve with quite a few viewers, whether they were at home, or in the locker room.

What we saw play out on Raw felt very real, at least, on CM Punk's end. After Raw, CM Punk took to Twitter to say a few words. Two tweets were enough to convey his thoughts:

"

I don't want any sympathy. Save it for Chris. Shit just got next level. I will hurt you.

Everybody has skeletons in the family closet. Keep my father out of it.

"

In a sport that has been plagued by alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse throughout its existence, I'm shocked that WWE went this route.

When there are wrestlers out there hurting, and families across the globe that have been torn apart by alcoholism, I don't think it should in any way, shape, or form be used in as a professional wrestling angle.
