Peyton Manning Rumors: Why Tennessee Titans Are Bad Fit for Ex-Colts QB

Jason HenryMar 13, 2012

The Tennessee Titans have emerged as another team interested in the services of one Petyon Manning. Since his release from the Colts, Manning’s name has been linked to a number of teams.

But there are only a few that seem to be serious contenders, including the Titans. This team has a solid quarterback base in place with Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker already on the roster.

Tennessee finished 2011 at 9-7 and lost their fair share of close games. One has to believe that a quarterback like Manning would be able to lift the Titans over the hump. But I say, hold on that train before it leaves the station.

Simply signing Manning is not the solution to all problems. There is the question about his health, the offense, the team dynamic and the Titans defense.

Also, would this impede the development of Locker, and how would the locker room feel about a spurned Matt Hasselbeck?

Then there is the defense. The Titans ranked 18th overall in defense in 2011 and were even worse defending the run, ranking 24th. Sometimes a team’s quarterback can be their best defense, but Manning wants to win now, and I do not believe the Titans have the pieces for a Super Bowl.

While Manning would no doubt have the keys to do whatever he pleases with the offense, how will he fit with running back Chris Johnson and receiver Kenny Britt? Both good players, but one has a checkered injury history and the other can become a malcontent.

As team owner Bud Adams declares his love for Manning while undermining the chemistry of his own locker room, Hasselbeck and Locker are left to wonder where they fit in the team’s future plans, Hasselbeck being the one with the most worry.

In the end, I believe that Manning is best served wearing another uniform in 2012. The Titans are headed in a direction that should be away from Manning, and not toward him. That may sound illogical to some, but it may be the best decision for the Titans.
