49ers Making a Comeback?

John JamisonJan 12, 2009

Ever since the early 1990s, the San Fransisco 49ers have not been recognized as a threat in the NFC...scratch that, the NFL. The Super Bowl teams of the 1980s that were led by the record-breaking quarterback, Joe Montana, and sensational receiver, Jerry Rice, made the 49ers one of the greatest franchises in NFL history, with five world titles.

This stat ties them with the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins in NFL history.

As of late, the San Fransisco 49ers have done nothing special under the reigns of coach Mike Nolan (as of 2005). As you probably know, Mike Nolan was removed of his position on the 49ers just this past October and is now the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

The new coach to come in, Mike Singletary, who was on the Chicago Bears during the 80s and traveled to the Super Bowl, has laid off much of the 49ers staff and has replaced them with his own promising staff. Under Singletary, the 49ers have gone 5-4, compared to a horrible 4-12 in 2006 under Nolan.

Can the 49ers bounce back from their slump? Well, with players like Frank Gore, who was rated the fifth-best running back in the NFL in 2007, and Patrick Willis, who has stepped up and become one of the best defensive players in the NFL, the 49ers, in my opinion, are rebuilding, but seem well on their way to success.

And within the next two seasons, San Francisco will make a strong run into the playoffs, possibly reminding the franchise—and its fans—what a Super Bowl feels like.
