Kevin Boss to New York Giants: Why Ex-Raider Would Look Good Back in Big Apple

Jesse ReedMar 12, 2012

The Oakland Raiders have told NFL.com's Jason La Canfora they will release tight end Kevin Boss by March 13, leaving the door wide open for a reunion with the New York Giants.

"

Raiders are releasing TE Kevin Boss, move will be made by tomorrow. Giants need a TE. I'm just saying ... #freeagency

— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 12, 2012"

The Giants are in need of help at the position, and both Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have them taking Coby Fleener in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham have made Fleener a hot commodity, and it would be a massive reach for the Giants to take him in the first round. He is a mid-to-late second round talent from my perspective.

After losing Boss to free agency last summer, the Giants suddenly find themselves in prime position to land him again for 2012 at a discounted rate, as Boss was not a major factor for the Raiders in 2011.

While he's not even half the athlete Gronkowski is, Boss is a big target in the red zone, and during his three years as a starter for the Giants he caught 16 touchdowns.

Eli Manning would love to have another tall, sure-handed tight end roaming the middle of the field. Jake Ballard wasn't exactly a world-beater for the Giants last year as Boss' replacement, not to mention the fact that he's recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL.

This seems like a no-brainer to me.

As soon as the Raiders officially let Boss go, the Giants should be on the horn to get him back.
