2012 NFL Free Agents: Texans Shouldn't Give Up on Matt Schaub for Peyton Manning

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

From the first moment I heard people saying the Houston Texans should make a play for Peyton Manning, I thought it was poppycock.

And now that there are legitimate reports that they have indeed inquired about Manning, I continue to think it is poppycock.

The Texans recently inquired about Manning, according to a source. If they get seriously involved, the Texans might be considered the Broncos' biggest threat. Like the Broncos, Houston is an AFC team. Unlike the Broncos, the Texans currently have the pieces in place to be considered a Super Bowl-contending team.

I just don't understand why the Texans would give up on Matt Schaub yet. Before breaking his foot last year, Schaub was having a fine season.

In 10 games, Schaub threw for 2,479 yards, 16 touchdowns, six interceptions, had a completion percentage of 61 percent and a quarterback rating of 96.8.

And I believe if he had been healthy, the Texans would have been a Super Bowl team with how the defense played last season.

So why go after Manning?

Listen, I know a healthy Peyton Manning is a better option than Matt Schaub. But there is absolutely no guarantee that he will be completely healthy, making him a relatively large risk. For a team lacking a competent quarterback, that risk makes sense.

For the Texans, who already have a good quarterback on the roster, that risk makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

So stick with Matt Schaub, Houston. You already have a quarterback capable of leading your team on roster.
