Vincent Jackson Rumors: Will the Washington Redskins Land the Top Free Agent WR?

John RozumJun 7, 2018

According to Lance Zeirlein of the Houston Chronicle, the Washington Redskins are expected to pursue Vincent Jackson.

With some cash to spend and the expected draft selection of Baylor's Robert Griffin III, Washington is an appealing city for Jackson right now.

To that end, will the Washington Redskins land Vincent Jackson?

Prediction: Yes.

The Redskins simply have a lot going for them at the moment and considering that Jackson is only 29 years old, can you imagine the connection between him and RG3?

We obviously have to anticipate that Washington will draft Griffin—after all, the Redskins haven't had a legit franchise quarterback under center since the days of Joe Theismann. And even Theismann began his career as a backup to Billy Kilmer.

Since then, Washington's best quarterback has been Mark Rypien, but he was surrounded by a boatload of talent. Receivers such as Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders and Art Monk as well as a ridiculous offensive line in Jeff Bostic, Mark Schlereth and Russ Grimm helped him out.

Still, Robert Griffin's potential is much greater than Rypien's, as Griffin is more mobile, much more accurate and has a stronger arm.

Lest we forget, Griffin also led the Baylor Bears to a 10-3 record despite being backed by a defense that allowed 37 points per game.

Getting back to Jackson, the Redskins have not had a Pro Bowl/All-Pro receiver since Santana Moss in 2005. Jackson paired with Moss would be a great duo and easily help Griffin's transition into developing as a pro quarterback.

There's also the defense capable of shutting down any offense and the cap space to add some valuable free agents. Jackson's addition will derive attention from defenders stacking the box to shut down the ground game and/or blitz RG3, while freeing up Moss underneath.

Then there's head coach Mike Shanahan, who is a proven NFL head coach with more success than most current head coaches except Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin and Tom Coughlin.

Washington has some good pieces in play right now except a quarterback and stud No. 1 receiver. Let's put it this way: if the Redskins do in fact acquire Jackson, can we really expect them to draft anyone else other than Robert Griffin?

No, because doing so would be a disservice to Washington fans, the franchise and Jackson.

The last thing the Redskins need is to keep Rex Grossman or John Beck under center. Unless they want to be set back for another "x" number of years as well as get a new head coach for 2013.
