NCAA Women's Tournament 2012: Why Brittney Griner and Baylor Will Cut Down Nets

Timothy RappMar 12, 2012

Sure, I'm not going out on a limb by picking the top team in the country, with the top player in the country, to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

But sometimes you just have to make the smart pick.

Brittney Griner—Baylor's 6'8" starting center and the best player in women's college basketball this year—is as dominant a force as there is in basketball right now regardless of level or gender.

She averaged 23.0 points, 9.6 rebounds and 5.1 blocks this year, showed an improved mid-range jumper, disrupted the flow of opposing offenses that were terrified to challenge her in the lane and even proved to be an excellent passer.

She's the primary reason it is so hard to bet against Baylor.

And betting against the Lady Bears hasn't been smart money this year, considering the team is 34-0 and has only failed to win by 10 or more points five times this year.

That's domination, people.

The Lady Bears were third in the nation in scoring this year (78.8 points per game) and sixth in points allowed per game (51.6). They lead the nation in blocked shots per game (7.9), are fourth in rebound margin per game (+12.5) and held opponents to the second-lowest field goal percentage in the nation (30.7 percent).

Oh, and along with Griner, the team also has another potential State Farm All-American on the team, Odyssey Sims.

So yeah, I'm not going out on a limb here when I predict Baylor will be cutting down the nets this year.

But why go out on a limb when such a safe pick exists?

Hit me up on Twitter—all of my tweets are Cinderella stories.
