San Francisco 49ers Free Agency Tracker: Updated Signings, Rumors, Storylines
Let's take a look at all the latest signings, rumors and storylines for the San Francisco 49ers as the team prepares for the busiest time of year in the NFL for self-improvement.
The NFL's free agency signing period is almost upon us, and teams are scrambling to sign their own players before they become available to all.
The 49ers are in great shape financially to make some major upgrades. The salary cap, which turned out to be much lower than many anticipated, is still far from an issue, as the 49ers' latest signings leave them with almost $19 million under the cap.
So where will the team go from here?
Report: 49ers Sign Super Bowl Winning RB Brandon Jacobs
1 of 10Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the 49ers have signed RB Brandon Jacobs. The details of the contract have not been reported.
This is an interesting move for the 49ers. It is unclear what the plan to use Jacobs is. Jacobs will be 30 years old starting next season. He also averaged only 3.8 yards per carry in 2011.
Report: QB Alex Smith Re-Signs
2 of 103/20: Michael Lombardi of NFL.com is reporting that the 49ers have agreed to a contract with Alex Smith.
After making the finals in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, the 49ers re-signed their breakout QB. While many 49ers fans would have loved Peyton in a Niners jersey, most fans are relieved that the 49ers get back their starter from last year.
The free agency market for QBs was barre. Alex Smith's experience and success in Harbaugh's offense are what got Alex Smith re-signed.
Report: Mario Manningham Agrees to Two-Year Deal
3 of 10March, 17 2012: According to Pro Football Talk via their Twitter, the 49ers and WR Mario Manningham have agreed to terms on a two-year deal.
This provides the 49ers offense with another down-field threat to go with newly signed Randy Moss and tight end Vernon Davis. Manningham notched 523 yards and four touchdowns last season with the New York Giants.
Report: 49ers Re-Sign CB Carlos Rogers
4 of 10According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com on Twitter, the 49ers have been able to re-sign cornerback Carlos Rogers. The new contract is reportedly for four-years and a max of $31.3 million.
Report: 49ers Agree to Deal with WR Randy Moss
5 of 10The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran wide receiver Randy Moss, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Twitter.
This could potentially be a huge pickup for the 49ers, as their need for a deep threat has been well documented.
Moss hasn't played since the 2010 season though, so it will be interesting to see how much he can bring to the team. Moss played for three teams in 2010: The New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans.
49ers' Own Free Agents
6 of 10| Alex Smith | The 49ers are working with Tom Condon, Smith's agent, to get the quarterback signed, but the two sides have hit a snag at the negotiating table in terms of the length of the deal. He should be signed soon. |
| Dashon Goldson | The 49ers have used the franchise tag to keep Goldson in San Francisco at least through 2012. He will cost the team just over $6 million. |
| Carlos Rogers | Rogers and the 49ers have both said they hope to work out a deal that is mutually beneficial to both sides, but there is a growing sentiment that the team will let him test the open market. |
| Ahmad Brooks | Brooks and the 49ers agreed on a six-year deal worth $37 million. |
| Ted Ginn | Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting he has re-signed a 1 year contract. |
| Adam Snyder | Snyder was one of the mainstays for the 49ers last year, but with all the linemen coming available in free agency, the team could be trying to upgrade. |
| Joshua Morgan | The 49ers don't want Morgan to hit the market and are doing all they can to re-sign him before the rest of the league gets the chance to land him. |
| Blake Costanzo | Report: The Bears have signed linebacker Blake Costanzo to a two-year deal according to his agent on Twitter. |
| C.J. Spillman | Spillman, a special teams genius, was re-signed by the team on a three-year, $6 million extension. |
| Larry Grant | Larry Grant has signed the 49ers 1 year tender. |
| Chilo Rachal | He's not coming back—I hope. |
| Moran Norris | Ditto |
| Reggie Smith | According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Smith isn't expected to return to the 49ers in 2012. |
| Justin Peele | Peele was signed as a stop-gag for Nate Byham in 2011 and won't be back. |
| Tavares Gooden | 3/13: Gooden has re-signed according to Jason La Canfora |
| Madieu Williams | Like Smith, Williams isn't expected to return to the 49ers in 2012. |
| Brett Swain | Swain is a restricted free agent, but the 49ers won't tender him, instead opting to let him hit the open market, though they do hope to keep him. |
| Tramaine Brock | Brock is a restricted free agent. The 49ers have offered him an exclusive rights tender worth $540,000 that he intends to sign soon. |
| Will Tukuafu | Tukuafu and the 49ers have agreed on a two-year contract worth the league-minimum. |
Below is a list of all of San Francisco's free agents and their situations as it pertains to the 49ers.
Report: The 49ers have reported via their Twitter handle that that CB Shawntae Spencer has been cut.
Is Mike Wallace the Answer at Wide Receiver?
7 of 10The 49ers have targeted Mike Wallace in free agency, "at a specific price."
This means they want him, but won't overpay for his services.
Wallace is a restricted free agent for the Pittsburgh Steelers who will be available to any team willing to offer a boatload of money and a first-round pick to land his considerable talents.
He has already said he's interested in joining the team in a recent interview, saying:
"Most definitely. Those are two playoff-caliber teams. Super Bowl-caliber teams. I think that the right person or the right piece for those guys could put them over the top. All they need is one more piece.
"
I know I'd love to see him in crimson and gold for 2012.
Could Josh Johnson Be an Alternative to Alex Smith?
8 of 103/20: Michael Lombardi of NFL.com is reporting that the 49ers have agreed to a contract with Alex Smith.
When Jim Harbaugh came to the 49ers last year, there was a lot of discussion about whether or not he'd want to bring over Josh Johnson from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to play quarterback.
One year later finds us in the same position.
With Smith still unsigned, it seems only logical that Johnson could be considered once again.
He was Harbaugh's star pupil during his time with the University of San Diego.
Will the 49ers Make a Push for Carl Nicks?
9 of 10Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting via his Twitter that the Buccaneers have agreed to a deal with former Saints guard Carl Nicks.
Carl Nicks is the premier offensive guard in this year's free agency class, and he says he is "already gone" from New Orleans.
He will be expensive.
Nicks wants to be the highest-paid guard in the NFL.
The 49ers need the help inside, though, and I would expect them to at least take a shot at landing Nicks to anchor the line next to young Anthony Davis.
Preparing for Life Without Carlos Rogers
10 of 103/13 Update: The 49ers have signed former Broncos CB Perrish Cox to a 2 year contract. No word on how this might effect the re-signing of Carlos Rogers.
The latest reports out of Santa Clara don't paint a pretty picture for the 49ers' chances to retain Carlos Rogers, and the team is expected to let him test the free market.
The 49ers have been adamant about not overpaying for their talent.
They won't fold under pressure now, and despite the tremendous success they had with Rogers in 2011, they seem willing to move on if they can't keep him at a reasonable price.
Of course, there is always the chance that Rogers ends up back with the team like Dashon Goldson did last year, but that isn't something we should hang our hats on.
Brandon Carr and Cortland Finnegan could be viable options for the team if Rogers ends up on another roster in 2012, but we'll have to wait and see what happens.
This is the most exciting time of year besides the playoffs. Stay tuned for updates on all the news as it breaks during the next few weeks.
