NCAA Bracket 2012: Teams That Shouldn't Bother Showing Up in Round 2

Andrew KulhaJun 7, 2018

The Long Island Blackbirds and the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs shouldn't even bother showing up to their second-round matchups in March Madness.

Sure, we all know that a Cinderella story is possible, but let's be frank: it's highly improbable.

There's a big difference there.

More often than not, the better team is going to win the game, especially in the early rounds of the tournament. While upsets do happen, they are the exception rather than the rule—and if you are wondering, I have picked two upsets here.

Back to reality though...

Long Island and UNC-Asheville have gotten the worst draws in the bunch, having to play against Michigan State and Syracuse, respectively.

At least with the other two No. 1 seeds, there are some distinct weaknesses the underdog could play off of. While MSU and Syracuse aren't perfect, they are by far the more complete No. 1 seeds of the foursome.

The Spartans may be the most complete team in the tournament, and they are on fire right now, having just won the Big Ten tournament by beating Ohio State.

This is a team led by arguably one of the best seniors in the nation in Draymond Green, who is averaging 16.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.6 points per game, and is coached by a future Hall of Famer in Tom Izzo.

They're a tough draw and they're experienced. I don't see them letting off the gas for Long Island.

Things won't be much easier for NC-Asheville, though, as Syracuse is incredibly deep and talented.

They boast impressive wins over the likes of Louisville, Georgetown, Marquette and Florida, and only lost twice on the year.

Their second loss came in the Big East tournament though, so they are bound to be hungry to get back on track. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs stand in the way of that goal. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, I don't think they stand a chance.

Part of the fun of March Madness is that anything can happen, so I do wish luck to both the Blackbirds and the Bulldogs.

That being said, I'm not expecting them to ruin many brackets, if any.

I guess it's all part of the fun...

May the best team win, kind of.
