Selection Sunday 2012 TV Info: 5 Reasons This Is a Must-Watch Event

Justin WeltonJun 7, 2018

Selection Sunday for college basketball is one of my top-two favorite days of the sports calender. There is so much anticipation to see which teams play who and go where.

This is an unbelievable event, and there are five reasons why it's must-watch TV.

Selection Sunday Rivals Super Bowl Sunday

Don't take me the wrong way but it's closer than people think. Maybe this is because I love basketball and could watch it all day, but there are similarities with the two.

1. People who don't even watch the sport regularly are involved for the tournament. Everyone fills out a bracket just like it seems like everyone is playing fantasy football.

2. If you love brackets, which I do, you love to see which teams match up well with each other. If you have played in a sports tournament, knowing the bracket and planning ahead is something that comes naturally. Anybody who played in those tournaments should know what I'm talking about.

3. One big difference is how long the actual event lasts. With coverage of the Super Bowl having a week or two before the event, college basketball gets the edge with a longer duration. Most people watch the first week of the tournament more closely than the last because of gambling, brackets and Cinderellas.

You have the option to do whatever you want.

Super Bowl Sunday is No. 1, but Selection Sunday sets up a perfect ending to a wild and crazy sport every season.

You can't get much better than that, and that's why you should watch the show on Sunday.

It's Exciting

Not to be too obvious here, but seriously, how exciting is it to know where your team plays or who plays who in the first round? Who has the easiest road to the Final Four? Which region is the most difficult? The list goes on.

Who Got Screwed?

Piggybacking off of my previous topic, a good reason to watch is to see who got left out of the field. We have mid-major programs deserving of bids and we have some power conference teams that have a gripe this season.

Just like every year, there will be teams left out of the field that felt like they were deserving.

Best Postseason Finish

I love the NHL, and I believe that they have the best playoffs in sports. However, the tournament uses four times as many teams and they all have an equal—depending on how you look at it—chance of winning the NCAA championship.

Another reason to watch Sunday to see which teams have the easiest road to the Final Four.

Getting Ahead of the Game

If you're in to college basketball, you will probably be watching anyway, but why not know some of the games and regions so you can act smart around your friends?

I am around a conversation every year that forgets where one team plays and who they play. It happens.

Act like you know your stuff around your buddies and watch the selection show on Sunday!
