March Madness 2012 Bracket: High Seeds Destined to Be Stunned in First Round

Justin WeltonJun 7, 2018

With Selection Sunday on the horizon, let's have a little fun with potential high seeds that could be upset in the first round.

This is complete speculation of seeds and who is where, but these three power conference teams are destined for a first-round upset.

No. 5 Wisconsin

Again, this is speculation on where Wisconsin will land, but I feel it will be a No. 5 seed or around this area.

The No. 5 vs. No. 12 game in the NCAA Tournament is always an exciting matchup that generally produce upsets.

Potential No. 12 seeds

1. Long Beach State

2. Saint Louis

3. Drexel

I'll say that Long Beach State would be a tough game not only against Wisconsin, but any team in the tournament. The 49ers won't be afraid of anybody in this field. They went to Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Louisville and Kansas during the regular season.

Casper Ware and company won't be afraid at all.

Speaking of Ware, all the Big West Player of the Year did Saturday night was put up 33 points. The Beach didn't even have Larry Anderson, their leader and the defensive player of the year in the conference. He will most likely be back for tournament play.

The 49ers get at you defensively with active arms, solid communication and a chemistry that is 100 percent together.

Wisconsin has been a good tournament team in the past, but this year has been a struggle at times. They haven't showed up ready to perform at a high level on a game-by-game basis, which leads me to believe that they are capable of being upset in the first round.

No. 4 Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish cooled off a little bit down the stretch losing three of their last five games.

Potential No. 13 seeds

1. Detroit

2. Belmont

3. New Mexico State

Notre Dame and Detroit already played once this season, so that is unlikely to be the case again. Let's look at Belmont.

Belmont finished 27-7 on the year and 16-2 in the Atlantic Sun. They played Duke to a one-point game to start the season off and they have plenty of tournament experience.

They are a group that shares the ball extremely well, dishing out 17.4 assists per game. This is a team capable of putting up over 80 points on any team in the country; they average 81.5.

Belmont has multiple players capable of hitting the long ball. They made 299 three-pointers as a team this season.

Notre Dame is 203rd in the nation in scoring at 66.5 points per game and they struggle to rebound the ball at 34 rebounds per game.

Mike Brey has done a phenomenal job with the team this season, getting them into third in the Big East. However, this is a team that overachieved significantly this season and they have passed their stride.

Notre Dame is a team that could very well be upset in the first round.

No. 7 Saint Mary's

I love watching Saint Mary's play late at night, but they could be in for a dog fight if they get one of these three teams.

Possible No. 10 seeds

1. Xavier

2. Temple

3. Virginia Commonwealth

We may be looking at some real good teams around the No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 line.

Given how poorly Xavier handled their brawl with Cincinnati earlier in the season, it's difficult to know where the selection committee have them in the tournament because of how it impacted their record.

Regardless, Xavier is hitting their stride and this is and has been a historically tough program to defeat in the NCAA Tournament. Led by Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons, this team is well-coached, experienced and ready to right their wrong with their brawl.

Saint Mary's is a potential Sweet 16 team with Rob Jones and Matthew Dellavedova. They can certainly make a run in this tournament.

However, Jones does have games where he doesn't show up to play. If that happens, Saint Mary's could be in a world of hurt going against athletes that Xavier has to offer.
