The Doctor's Weekly WWE SmackDown Recap: 117 Things We Learned, Loved and Hated

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 3, 2018

This week's SmackDown provided fans with quite a bit of coverage on a lot of different feuds and angles as well as planted the seeds for another possible feud.

For the second time Kofi Kingston and R-Truth beat Epico and Primo, which seems to imply that the new duo will receive a tag title shot sometime soon, possibly at WrestleMania if WWE wants to have every title defended on the card.

We also got to witness a match between Teddy Long and John Laurinaitis, which was more posturing and outside activity than it was wrestling. Long won with a roll-up, the sole wrestling move in the match.

Daniel Bryan seemed to show more animosity towards AJ than he has in recent weeks, which could signal the end of the relationship coming sooner than later.

I truly appreciate my loyal readers but for those of you who are new, each week I recap SmackDown with a long list.

The entries are made up of equal parts humor, recap, play-by-play, revelations, speculations, questions, answers and anything else I notice during the show. I sometimes comment on commercials too, just because I get bored during them.

I have games each week as well. The main game is trying to correctly predict the length of the next Divas match to the second. There was no Divas match on this show so the predictions made on the Raw recap will carry over.

The other popular game is coming up with new and humorous nicknames for David Otunga revolving around a part of his character or attire from that week.

In the past I have given you specific topics but from here forward I want you guys to use whatever you want from his performance during the show. I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

This game has produced such wonderful nicknames as the Macchiato Mauler, The Sweater-vest Savior, The Bow-tie Brawler, The Caffeinated Crippler and my personal favorite, the Folger's Soldier.

I try and interject some fun into these lists, so I hope you have fun reading this week's list of the 117 things we learned, loved and hated from SmackDown.

1. We get a video to remind us that John Laurinaitis is in charge of SmackDown tonight.
2. I had actually forgot about that, so that was helpful.
3. David Otunga and JL are in the ring with a cage being lowered onto the ring.
4. Johnny says that tonight he will show everyone how to run a show
5. The first match of the night is Santino vs Swagger in a cage for the US title.
6. Nice, JL and Otunga were in the middle of the aisle and Santino just brushed past between them.
7. Santino lays on the announce table, much to the dismay of Michael Cole.
8. Santino's cobra sleeve is so ridiculous, but he sells it well by taking it so seriously.
9.  Dolph opted to go with a suit and his new shirt instead of the shirt-skirt he has been sporting with his fur lately.
10. Swagger's hair is flat again and I still can't decide if he looks better this way. He looks older than he did with his spiked hair, which is good but the look in general is odd for him.
11. Swagger takes control of the match in the early going.
12. Santino almost escapes the cage right away, but Swagger pulls him back in.
13. Santino looks punch-drunk but ends up hitting some of his trademark moves before getting a near-fall.
14. Dolph tries to climb in on the cage and Santino gives his hands a pair of cobras before giving one to Swagger.
15. Ziggler is pretending like he was actually bitten by a venomous snake as he was booted from ringside. Remember, snakes are not poisonous, they're venomous. Poison is ingested and venom is injected.
16. I get when they pretend Kane and Undertaker have superpowers, but Santino's cobra being venomous is just plain weird.
17. We come back from commercial and Swagger rips the cobra sleeve off of Santino.
18. Swagger hits the Vader-style corner splash for another two count.
19. Swaggles tries to climb the cage, but gets pulled to the mat by Santino and almost gets pinned
20. Santino is getting in more offense than he usually gets in a match, nice to see.
21. Santino hits a huge spinning DDT from the corner.
22. Swagger puts Santino in the ankle lock as he is halfway out the door.
23. Awesome spot, Santino pushes Swagger through the door when he reverses the ankle lock and Vickie slams it into his head, making it possible for Santino to escape.
24. Teddy comes out and hugs Santino to help celebrate the win.
25. I hope this is leading to Santino becoming less of a comedy character and more of a legit wrestler because he is actually very talented.
26. A shot of inside a casino is shown and it is quite clear that most of the people walking past the camera were not locals. The Mickey Mouse sweaters are a dead give-away.
27. Johnny Ace is shown fuming backstage at the outcome of the Santino match.
28. David Otunga takes time to slurp his coffee before responding.
29. Long comes in to rub it in JL's face and Laurinaitis makes a match between Aksana and Kane for later tonight.
30. Long pleads with him to change his mind and JL suggests they have a match to see if Aksana will face Kane.
31. The swerve is that if Teddy wins Aksana wrestles Kane.
32. So I guess he should just lay down in the ring to save his woman.
32.5 Many men have been in a position where they had to choose their pride or their pleasure, so it is a relateable problem to be faced with. Although, the average person is not being threatened with a match against Kane so I guess it is all relative.
33. Booker is calling Teddy and Johnny old but he really is no spring chicken either.
34. A replay is shown of the showdown between HBK and Triple H from Monday.
35. Drew McIntyre is out after the break and he looks really upset.
36. Oh great, Drew is talking in the third person. This always works well.
37. Drew Mac talks about how he is being given another chance to get his job back by facing a mystery opponent.
38. Khali's music hits and Drew looks pissed.
39. The sweater vest savior comes out to change the match to Drew vs Hornswoggle.
40. Damn, Hornswoggles face hit the mat so hard when Drew pushes him down that it made me cringe.
41. Interesting, there's a full moon tonight. Wear a belt, Hornswoggle!
42. The official calls the match since Hornie can't continue.
43. The Bizarro Maryse comes in to talk to Teddy about his match.
44. Teddy Long looks so old when they show him in a close-up.
45. Ezekiel Jackson is out next to face Mark Henry.
46. This has to be two of the most powerful people in WWE history facing off.
47. Henry looks like he has a symbol on his singlet which is similar to the symbol on Rhodes trunks. It's almost a military ranking symbol,, but upside down instead.
48. Henry wins a very fast match with the world's strongest slam.
49. I have been thinking recently that Henry could use a change in entrance music.
50. Whoever made the Laurinaitis "Mr Excitement" sign deserves a cookie. A really good cookie.
51. How the hell is John Laurinaitis that skinny and that fat at the same time?
52. The Long/Luarinaitis match is up next.
53. JL wants Teddy to lay down for him and he tries to use Aksana as leverage.
54. Johnny Ace motions to the back and Kane's music hits before he starts coming towards the ring.
55. Aksana looks freaked out at the possibility of Kane beating her into a pulp.
56. Orton runs down and makes the save by giving Kane an RKO on the floor.
57. Teddy uses the distraction as a chance to roll up JL for the 1-2-3.
58. Long and Aksana quickly go to the back while JL complains in the ring.
59. Is anyone else just waiting for the moment that Aksana turns on Long and admits she is just using him?
60. The six-man main event with Orton, Show and Sheamus vs Rhodes, Miz and Bryan is funny because all the heels are smaller than the smallest baby face on the other team. Not often that a whole heel team is the total underdog in the match.
61. So, can anyone actually decipher the plot of this John Carter movie from the trailers? I am lost
62. Kofi and Truth are out next for their match with Epico and Primo
63. Booker's impression of Laurinaitis is by far the worst impression of anybody, ever.
64. Ravishing Rosa and the tag champs are out next and Rosa looks more and more like a real valet/manager every week.
65. I just hope WWE doesn't go the route of breaking up Epico and Primo right after they lose the titles by having them feud over the affections of Rosa.
66. Who am I kidding, of course that's what they will do.
67. Had Booker been born 10 years later he and Truth could have made an awesome team. They have similar move-sets and both like to dance in the ring on top of the fact that they seem to have similar senses of humor judging by Booker's constant praise for Truth.
68. Good match so far. Lots of back and forth momentum and quick moves for the first few minutes.
69. Epico puts Kofi in one of the most perfectly executed abdominal stretches I have seen in a long time. You see a lot of guys forget to loop their leg in between the legs of the guy they are holding in the submission.
70. I just realized that the symbol on Truth's shirt and Kofi's attire actually go together perfectly.
71. Truth and Kofi win the match after Truth hits his finisher on Primo for the pin.
72. This match could have been given more time but these guys made good use of what they were given.
73. I really hope WWE keeps both of these teams around for a bit and rebuild the division with The Usos and another team or two from developmental.
74. Wow, WWE has been using clips of Ultimate Warrior in the videos a lot more in the last year.
75. That guy is crazy. Yes he is other Barry, yes he is.
76. Nice. They show a recap of The Rock and Cena from Monday and they show a girl in the audience dancing to the Rock singing, who I specifically commented on in my Raw Recap. She was not dancing to the part they showed her dancing to, she was dancing to CM Punk's entrance music. Tricky editors and their misleading montages.
77. Can we get a "Captain Catchphrase" shirt made up?
78. Cole is in the ring and he is asking Sheamus to come down to the ring for an interview.
79. After a misplaced commercial break, Daniel Bryan is out next for the interview.
80. Ha, Bryan calls out Cole on being one of his supporters all of a sudden.
81. AJ is doing a great job playing the big-eyed, innocent girl with a crush on the bad guy.
82. Bryan equates his success to being a great technical wrestler and being a vegan.
83. Awesome, even AJ laughs a bit when Bryan says it is his sex appeal that has also made him successful.
84. Sheamus plays to the crowd really well as he says it is luck which has helped him to get to the top, on top of being a monster in the ring.
85. Hey Sheamus! Saying AJ should be wearing a Catholic school girl outfit is not really insulting her when she looks like a 12-year-old. You are just stating facts at this point.
86. Plus, a lot of people have a fetish for school girls and they probably agree with you that she should be wearing one.
87. AJ tries to talk and Bryan just says "Shut up" and pulls the mic away.
88. You could actually hear a lot of people in the audience laugh at that.
89. I must admit that Bryan's dead-pan attitude when he said it made me kind of laugh a bit too.
90. Hahaha, Bryan says AJ has gotten in the way of his success and then he turns to her and blandly says "I mean that literally sweetheart" with AJ just looking down like she knew it was true.
91. Sheamus talks about being able to beat Bryan for the title and Cody Rhodes music hits right away.
92. Oh, I guess the main event is about to start. That would explain his presence.
93. C'mon, WWE! Why the hell would you show a close-up of Big Show's ass in sumo gear? I'm trying to eat over here!
94. I feel too lazy to go check WWEShop.com. Can someone tell me if Cody Rhodes has his own shirt yet? I am just now noticing that he never wears one to the ring like most guys who have a shirt with their name on it.
95. Of course Orton has to come out without a shirt on and totally disprove my theory about people always wearing a shirt when they have one on the website.
96. I guess wearing a shirt would wipe off too much of the baby oil he so clearly spends several minutes applying.
97. It's not too bad tonight, but he usually looks plastic because he is so shiny.
98. Rhodes and Sheamus will start things off.
99. Orton gets the tag early on but Rhodes keeps control of the match and tags in Bryan, who runs into a boot from Orton after being in the ring for thirty seconds.
100. The Miz and Show are in the ring now and Miz looks like the slap he took to the chest really hurt him.
101. Good heel move, Rhodes tags in and then tags Miz back in immediately and bails to the outside.
102. Damn. Sheamus just destroyed the whole other team after the commercial with a series of heavy strikes.
103. Bryan ends up putting him down with a nice looking knee to Sheamus' temple.
104. I think Sheamus purposely took that flying knee a little stiffer than he should have to sell it better. Nice dedication.
105. Rhodes, Miz and Bryan double team Sheamus a couple times with some nice combos.
106. Rhodes and Bryan would be an amazing tag team if WWE booked them right, but they wouldn't be booked right and we all know it.
107. Sheamus is really taking a beating from the heel team and he has been for the last few minutes.
108. I like how Booker will put over Cody's skill but say he has a bad attitude without acting bitter about losing to him. It's the sign of a good baby face announcer to recognize a heel's ability on the mic but still say they suck as a human being.
109. Sheamus and Bryan are fighting on the outside while Orton and Miz are in the ring.
110. Orton ends up giving Miz the RKO and getting the win for his team.
111. Randy Orton did not have a ton of time in that match.
112. Kane comes out and attacks Orton and the two brawl around the ring.
113. Kane ends up getting the upper hand and putting Orton over the barrier.
114. The show ends with the two still fighting up the steps in the crowd.
115. No Divas match this week so any predictions for the exact time from my Raw recap will carry over to the next Raw, but feel free to leave another prediction below.
116. Overall this was a decent show with quite a bit of advancement in several feuds.
117. I apologize that this week's recap was a day late. I have had some scheduling changes recently and due to that I will now be posting these recaps on Saturday instead of Friday evening.

Thanks for reading and feel free to share your thoughts and additions to the list below. Also, please take a moment and make your prediction for the length of the next Divas match.
