Matt Flynn Rumors: Why the Cleveland Browns Must Pursue the Green Bay Backup

Donald WoodMar 10, 2012

With the Washington Redskins winning the rights to the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft (and perhaps the Robert Griffin III sweepstakes), the Cleveland Browns have to go for the next best option for their team.

That option is free-agent prospect and Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn.

Many fans fear that Flynn will be the second coming of Kevin Kolb, but Flynn comes from a similar system in Green Bay that the Browns will run in Cleveland. Kolb was thrown into a system that he had never seen with Phoenix, not even in college.

While there isn’t a huge film vault on which to judge Flynn, his preview game for free agency was more than impressive. In Green Bay's 16th regular-season game of 2011, the backup QB threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns (both franchise records).

The Canton Repository is reporting about Browns GM Tom Heckert's press conference and what he really means:

"

"The gates are wide open to signing Matt Flynn next week. As to drafting a quarterback high, Heckert said, 'We might do it. We're not saying that's the case.' As to whether Flynn will be in Ohio for a visit after the market opens at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Heckert hesitated and said, 'Ummmmmmm.' It was the proverbial pregnant ummmmmmm.

"

As a man, if you've ever been in a relationship, you will know that as soon as that spouse drops the ball like Heckert did there, something is amiss.

Cleveland is going after Flynn—and hard.

While Colt McCoy is a solid NFL backup, having him start for the Browns was a sign that the team was in limbo. Despite Flynn’s lack of experience, he has the skills and knowledge necessary to be an NFL star. The question will be if he can put it all together in Cleveland.

Flynn will be coming into the team with huge expectations, but the Browns have plenty of cap room and picks to start the improvement. That rebuilding starts with Matt Flynn under center.
