The Jets Need a New Pilot; You Interested?

Moe NagleJan 11, 2009

The New York Jet's franchise is the team that loves to break hearts. Gang Green has an uncanny ability of getting so close but being so far away. They have a way a losing in such a disgusting fashion that only a New York Mets fans can understand. In the Big Apple there are big expectations.

Having that been said, in the 46 years of existence, the franchise only has three coaches in their history with winning records. The first is Bill Parcells who wins everywhere he goes and the second is current University of Virginia Head Coach Al Groh. The third is Sammy Baugh.

Parcells' record of 29-19 proves the man a winner. The previous coach to Parcells was Rich Kotite who went 4-28 in his two years at the helm.  Parcells' only expectation was to right the ship, which he clearly did leading the team to an AFC championship game.

Al Groh only coached one year with the Jets but had a 9-7 record.

Sammy Baugh was the Franchise's inaugural coach.  He had a 14-14 record in two years of service.

Even the Super Bowl victory the Jets have is with a coach, Weeb Ewbank, who has a sub-500 career coaching record.

My point is simple. Jet fans call for heads to roll when their team does not win, much like most fans. The head coach is responsible so he takes the fall. Whoever is lucky enough to pick up where "Man Genius" left off remember, this team doesn't know glory, they know the choke job!

Owner Woody Johnson is grasping at straws for the next candidate, but nobody wants to coach a team that is expected to win the Superbowl and not make the playoffs.  Don't feel so bad, there are only a mere three people who have winning records with this team.

Mangini was brought in with a new hope. He is of the Belichick-Parcells school which should mean good things. It did not, and the Browns are going to have a rude awakening.

Herm Edwards was brought in to envigor this team. He did not. Apparently they missed that memo in Kansas City.

A winner know how to win. It is that simple. The Jets know losing and until they are shown anything different, all flights to the big game are delayed. There is no question getting over the hump is a daunting task, but excuse time is over, especially with the New York Giants renewed success.

The next head coach will get his day in the sun but owner Woody Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum are not happy about dishing out millions to free agents and not making the playoffs. Your leash will be short. Welcome to the big city!
