NBA Trade Rumors: Portland Will Not Get Crazy Asking-Price for Jamal Crawford

Alex KayMar 9, 2012

The Portland Trail Blazers may be interested in moving Jamal Crawford before the trade deadline as their team is falling out of contention this year.

However, it’s simply not going to happen at their asking price.

According to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, the team is seeking a first-round pick along with a player to help fix their point guard woes.

It’s understandable the team would like to get someone like Eric Bledsoe or Luke Ridnour in return, as Raymond Felton clearly isn’t a fit in their plodding half court offense.

A first-round pick would also make sense for Crawford, who is almost 32 years old but could definitely contribute on a potential playoff team.

However, asking for both is too steep.

Smart franchises around the NBA, which make up most of the market for the Portland gunner, aren’t going to divest so many assets for a player who simply isn’t worth all that much.

Remember—Crawford was only able to get a $5 million deal from the Blazers as one of the top free agent 2-guards on the market this offseason.

For all the things he does well—incredible range, clutch factor and ability to create his own shot—Crawford has just as many faults.

He takes too many shots far too often, even on a cold shooting night. He is a defensive liability despite his 6’5” frame. He's averaged 3.9 assists during his career despite dominating the ball when he’s on the court.

There are plenty of drawbacks that potential suitors are well aware of. As a result, they aren’t willing to go all-in to bring Crawford in.

If the Blazers want to enter rebuilding mode, they should take the first-rounder. If they are trying to compete this season, they should take a point guard in return.

Portland will not get both assets for Crawford. The sooner they realize it, the sooner they can move him off the team and move on.
