2012 NFL Draft: Justin Blackmon's 40 Time Will Cause Teams to Rethink Trades

Wes ODonnellJun 5, 2018

There was talk of the field in Stillwater being fast for Oklahoma State's pro day, but that doesn't take anything away from the blazing times Justin Blackmon just turned in.

The two-time Biletnikoff Award winner and likely top-10 draft pick in the 2012 NFL draft was in need of a good day after declining to run at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and he got it.

Pokes beat writer Gina Mizell reported:

"

Blackmon's second attempt was just unofficially clocked in the 4.3 range up here. Again, this is NOT official. But he performed #OKState

Mike Loyko hears the same thing:

"

Blacmon's second time according to multiple people in Stillwater .. 4.39 and right around there

And Josina Anderson confirms that, at the very least, Blackmon clocked some super fast times:

"

2 scouts clock Justin Blackmon at 4.41 and 4.46 on his second 40. "That was fast," heard from the bleachers. twitpic.com/8u24yp

What it all means is that the speed concerns many had about the receiver aren't really concerns at all.

Blackmon, nearly 6'1" and about 207 pounds, has always been considered a great talent but one that uses a unique set of football skills—not dynamic speed—to make plays.

He's physical, doesn't shy from contact, can go up and take the ball away from defenders and has also shown the ability to run away from defenses as well.

Blackmon was extremely productive at Oklahoma State, but teams always wanted to know how his measurables and times would rate next to previously selected top-10 receivers.

After today's performance, the St. Louis Rams, who many consider to be the odds-on favorite to take the Pokes receiver, will have to be careful about how far they trade down the board.

St. Louis made public their desire to get out of the way for any team that wanted to come up and draft Heisman Trophy-winner Robert Griffin III (they didn't say that, but he is why teams want to move up) at No. 2 overall. Teams rumored to be interested in RG3 range from the Cleveland Browns at No. 4 to the Washington Redskins at No. 6 and to the Miami Dolphins at No. 8.

Teams outside the top 10 are unlikely to give up the desired amount for the No. 2 pick.

But Blackmon has now complicated matters by showing off in Stillwater today. In fact, he likely drove up the price it will cost for a team to land RG3 as well.

The Rams can't trust that the Minnesota Vikings, Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Washington Redskins won't take Blackmon in front of them. And they can be damn sure that Jacksonville won't let him slide past No. 7.

That means the Dolphins would have to blow away St. Louis for the Rams to drop to No. 8 overall. Dropping to Washington's spot—considered a major player in the race for RG3—at No. 6 is now a risk. Even Minnesota at No. 3 and Cleveland at No. 4 are potential suitors for the star receiver.

Free agency will help solve some of the predicaments currently facing the Rams, but filling their biggest need with Justin Blackmon just got a lot more difficult if they decide to trade down the board.

Throwing seven different kinds of smoke on Twitter too.
