NFL Rumors: Browns GM Admits to Talking with Rams About No. 2 Pick

Eric BallMar 8, 2012

Finally, we have a team that has admitted to speaking with the St. Louis Rams about the No. 2 pick.

Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert spoke with reporters on Thursday and acknowledged having discussions about trading up for a chance to select Robert Griffin III with the Rams’ No. 2 selection in next April’s NFL draft. While he wouldn’t classify the talks as “serious,” the mere acknowledgment of such a discussion is intriguing—especially this far away from the draft.

When asked if he would give up the Browns' fourth and 22nd selections they currently hold in the first round, Heckert quickly shot back, “I’d never say never about anything.”

After another disappointing 5-11 season, every part of the Browns roster is being evaluated, and that includes quarterback.

Predictably, Heckert was very kind with the words he had to say about current Cleveland QB Colt McCoy. He says the organization is still behind the third-year pro:

"

We're not down on Colt McCoy, so I just want to make that clear. We still think Colt's going to be a good player. The question is whether we have enough to see what Colt can do, and I think we do. If we catch more balls and protect him better, can Colt be a lot better? Yes. That's our goal. We still think Colt can play in this league and it's our job to help him out.

"

So essentially, he is blaming the receivers and offensive line for McCoy’s struggles. With that line of thinking, you’d think Cleveland would stick with the No. 4 selection and draft receiver Justin Blackmon.

Yet after the incredible combine stats of Griffin III and the strong buzz he is currently carrying, the Browns would be foolish to not at least make the phone call to the Rams and get an idea of what they want for the pick. Cleveland is one of only three teams with two first-round picks and carries much more flexibility than a team like the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins.

Heckert may not be providing many details, but he doesn’t need to. The Browns are trying to trade up and Heckert dropped the hint we need.

Already the favorites, my money is on the Browns to eventually find a way to land the second pick and draft RGIII.
