Cadillac Championship 2012: Tiger Woods Needs Big Second-Round Performance

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Tiger Woods is ready to prove he is back in the mix for one of the top players in the PGA tour at the Cadillac Championship on Friday.

After last Sunday's unbelievable 8-under-par 62, fans were expecting Woods to get right back to the player he was in 2000, when he was beating everyone at the British Open by 15 strokes. Those days are gone, but it does not mean he can't get back to being a dominant player.

The opening round at the Cadillac Championship did not exactly inspire a lot of confidence. He shot an even-par 72 but had a lot of mistakes after an eagle on the first hole. The weather was a big factor in his problems, with the wind wreaking havoc on his driver.

Tiger himself said before the tournament started that it would be impossible to expect him to duplicate what he did the previous week because of the differences in the courses.

"It's a whole new golf course. It doesn't count. That tournament's over with. Whether you missed the cut or win the tournament, it's over. Now we are on to a new week, a new golf course, and have to learn it and be ready by Thursday," he said.

With a clear focus, Woods can take some of the positives he had in the first round to apply them on Friday. He can't go up against Mother Nature, which means he will have to check his driver at the door, assuming the weather is still playing tricks on everyone.

Where Woods showed great poise was on the green with his putter. There were still moments where he lost his way, but overall he did a great job of locating the ball on the greens and he trusted himself when he got on the green.

As long as Woods can figure out his problems off the tee on Friday, he should get back into contention easily.

He played an underwhelming round on Thursday, but nothing about his performance should discourage where his game is at right now. The big PGA victory is coming sooner rather than later, though it is going to take a major effort in this tournament to get on top.
