ACC Tournament 2012 Schedule: Biggest Sleepers Still Alive

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

The ACC favorites Duke and UNC still have a couple teams to worry about on their road to a third and season series deciding game in the tournament final.

These teams have already defeated at least one of the conference juggernauts. One owns a victory over both:

Florida State

The Seminoles have to scare the heck out of both UNC and Duke. They are the only team in the conference that own a victory over both ACC powers.

They defeated the Blue Devils on January 21 at Cameron Indoor Stadium with a three pointer at the buzzer by Michael Snaer. The loss snapped Duke's 45-game home win streak.

Witness the clutchness:

The Noles impressed me so much in this game. They executed down the stretch, they didn't let the crowd or Duke's talent intimidate them and they won in impressive fashion.

Florida State blew out the Tar Heels in Tallahassee 90-57. They were blazing from three point range in this game, and the Tar Heels never knew what hit them.

The key for Florida State is the three point shot. When they are knocking them down they are a tough out. In the two games combined against Duke and UNC, they shot 47 percent from the arc. That is the great equalizer for a size disadvantage.

Snaer and Delvidas Dulkys are the primary threats from distance. Both of them shoot 39 percent from three and are without conscience. If the Noles pull the upset, look for these two to have big games.

Miami

Only one Florida school can challenge for the ACC crown as the Noles await the winner of the Miami vs Georgia Tech matchup.

The Canes are favored as the sixth seed over the 11th seeded Yellow Jackets. The Canes own an OT victory over Duke, and they have the size upfront to match-up with the Tar Heels.

It hasn't worked out in two games against UNC thus far as they have dropped both games in the regular season.

Still, the Canes' 6'10 Reggie Johnson and 6'11" Kenny Kadji represent the rare collegiate front line that can match the size of Tar Heels' John Henson and Tyler Zeller.

With teams set before them that they have defeated in the regular season, the Canes should feel confident about their prospects of at least reaching the semi-finals.

They defeated Georgia Tech by 15 points in January and recently shocked the Noles 78-62 on February 26th.

The Canes couldn't match-up with the Tar Heels again until the final, but if they can defeat Georgia Tech, and the Noles, they should get another shot at Duke.

Who knows what happens from there, but two football schools have an opportunity to make some noise on the court in the conference tournament
