Matt Flynn Rumors: Miami Dolphins Have Shown No Interest in Quarterback

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

After Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was named the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, many expected that the team would go after Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn when he hit free agency. Think again.

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, the Dolphins have not even expressed "remote interest" in Flynn. That's certainly a shock since you'd figure Miami would at least be showing some love to him, at least as a backup option.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has reportedly told general manager Jeff Ireland to go hard after Peyton Manning now that he has been cast loose by the Indianapolis Colts. While that seems like a solid plan, let's not forget that the last two guys Miami went all-in on were coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher, and the franchise was left wanting both times.

Personally, I think the Dolphins will land Manning, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it, since anything can happen in the crazy world that is NFL free agency. It really is shocking that they haven't at least expressed internal interest in Flynn as a backup option, since he is clearly the second-best free agent quarterback available.

A few weeks ago, it looked like Matt Flynn was destined to land in South Beach. The connection with Philbin just made too much sense to ignore, but now it appears the Dolphins have decided to focus totally on acquiring Peyton Manning.

If that strategy works out, Ross and Ireland will look really smart. If it doesn't, they'll have a lot of explaining to do.
